We opined on how climate action could better legitimize Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize, reconsidered the lobster (in term of sustainability, twice), and imagined what the green job boom might look like. We don’t need sci-fi missile defense systems (or films), we might not need yogurt, but we will always need cultural-zeitgeist-defining punctuation marks.

Remember to save the date of October 24, when Alissa Walker will lead a walking tour of New York’s High Line park. And do keep pouring over our roll-out of GOOD 100 entries. They are a pretty classy bunch.

We’d also like to applaud President Barack Obama, on his gracious reception of the Nobel Peace Prize today. It’s should make us proud, as American’s to see a sitting president bestowed with such an honor. It clearly is, as Obama himself said, “a call to action,” though perhaps also a symbol of our nation’s improved standing in the world.

This week we learned about the practice of speed writing, a fanciful path toward blind love, the truth underneath the numbers in the nonprofit world, the nation’s increasingly faithless religious landscape, France’s recycled gas stations, and some beautiful art between the cracks (courtesy of our friends at Wooster). We also learned that if we want to see action at COP15, we need to urge legislation at home; and if you want James Wood to like your novel, make sure you don’t dictate it.

Earlier this week, we served up an online reading list for entrepreneurs, praised the unsung heroism of editors, and applauded the launch of the Design Revolution road trip. We explored the recycled beauty of Nek Chand’s garbage garden, found the silver lining behind Van Jones’s untimely departure, illustrated the numbers the most carnivorous countries, and took a new look at some iconic fast foods (while hoping for a way to turn those fries into nutrients). We also enjoyed some Italian slow food and pondered the increasing heaviness of the world’s biggest book.

The abbreviated week commenced with a profile of New York City’s alluring, oddball mayoral candidate, Reverend Billy, and a look Joe Berlinger’s new film, Crude, which delves into the complexities of the Amazonian Chernobyl. It continued with a graphic exploration of world literacy, a moment of make-believe brain sharing, and the announcement of a new GOOD contest (the deadline is September 30).

We went on to investigate the potential of algae as fuel, one of the nation’s disappearing societies, and the question of how to increase comfort while navigating uncertainty. We also mined The Simpsons for political insight, talked to Doug Pray about Art and Copy, and began counting down the days to COP15.

Amid such a heavy week, we looked at violence in Tijuana, tracked the growth of food stamp usage, and discussed Turkey’s nuclear crossroads.

But it hasn’t been all serious business around here.  We also found the time to play pranks at corporate conferences, change our underwear, talk about sexy fruits, and read books on working-class folk.
