Transparency: The Effects of Bike Commuting on Obesity

The average American is both overweight and spends more than 100 hours per year commuting, that vast majority of those hours being spent in a car. Are those numbers correlated? Could we help reduce our societal weight gain by encouraging more commutes by bike or foot? Our latest Transparency is a look at the number of active commutes in several countries, as compared to those countries obesity rates.

Transparency: The Change in Carbon Emissions

As the world gets closer to the COP15 Climate Change conference, it’s important to look at from where the emissions around the world are coming. In the last year, some countries have started  to clean up their act, while other countries continue to pump out carbon dioxide. Our latest Transparency is a look at the five highest emitters in each region of the world as of 2007 and whether they have increased or decreased both…

Transparency: Foods That Might Make You Sick

Until recently, food-borne illness was most often associated with contaminated meat. But after last year’s tomato scare, illness from more innocous-seeming foods has become more acknowledged. With the exception of meat, which falls under the purview of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, most of America’s food sources are overseen by the Food and Drug Administration. Some argue that the FDA isn’t empowered to do enough to enforce food-safety regulations, and legislation is currently before Congress…

Transparency: Biking to Work

Transparency: The Rise of Atheism in America

America has always been a religious country. But a recent study finds that might be changing; The percent of the country who considers themselves atheists is rising rapidly. While they still make up a small minority in comparison to the major religions, the current trends indicate that we may not be one nation, under God, forever. Our latest Transparency is a look at what we believe.

Transparency: Do Health-care Companies Have to Compete for Customers?

Opponents of the public option claim that by being forced to compete against the government, health care companies will be at an unfair advantage. But right now, health care companies hardly have to compete at all. In most states, one health care provider controls the vast share of the market, which allows them to raise premiums far faster than the wages of their customers rise. The market might be the best solution for health care,…

Transparency: The Most Committed Crimes in the Country

If this year is any indication, when these kids grow up, this is what they’ll be arrested for. The FBI recently released its report on U.S. crime in 2008, which includes a breakdown of the number of arrests made for every type of crime, offering an interesting picture of how Americans break the law (or, at least, how they get caught doing so). It seems that drugs and alcohol are getting us into a lot of…

Transparency: Which Countries Eat the Most Meat

An increase in the consumption of meat is directly correlated to an increase in a country’s economic development. As a country becomes richer, its citizens generally eat more meat, a much denser source of protein than is available in poorer countries. But the range of the amount of meat eaten in different countries around the world is truly astounding, from barely enough for a few hamburgers to the weight of several people. Our latest Transparency…
