Author Colin Beavan, in research for his next book, began the No Impact Project in November 2006. A newly self-proclaimed environmentalist who could no longer avoid pointing the finger at himself, Colin leaves behind…
Almir Surui, the chief of an indigenous tribe in the Amazon rainforest, has—you guessed it—teamed up with Google. He’s using Google Earth to document and map illegal deforestation in real time, making it a lot harder for the government to ignore.
Recently, it seems like the “environmental movement,” or whatever you want to call it, has focused more on carbon and clean energy technology than good old Save-the-whales-style conservation. But we should still save the…

I was looking forward to spending one-on-one time…
Most of the world’s population now lives in cities. How can we make sure these urban centers are good homes for humanity? Cities from Bogotá and Rio de Janeiro to Seoul are leading the way, using fresh ideas to reduce pollution and waste; provide efficient, clean transportation; and support biodiversity.
…I was at a design and sustainability type conference/workshop this weekend and Adam Werbach from SaatchiS shared this in his presentation: its a Cadbury commercial airing in Ghana—-bascially, their take on talking about fair trade is celebrating the awesome Ghanain culture it supports. …Fritz Haeg knows a thing or two about fecundity. It’s not just that the artist has been impressively prolific in a variety of aesthetic fields over the last few years (though he certainly has); it’s that, at least in the most celebrated examples of his artwork, reimaginings of nature and new life could be said to be his guiding principle.
Beginning in 2005, he declared war on the grass lawns of suburban homes, overhauling those…
While we’re on the subject of affordable housing, let’s talk about sustainable design, for the two walk hand in hand. But first, let’s talk about American cheese.
Most would agree that American cheese, like toothpaste or tennis balls, is an affordable commodity. When we talk about affordable American cheese slices, we are talking about the relatively small amount of dollars required to acquire them at the American cheese store. The same holds true at the tennis ball…
Filmed during the inaugural year during London Design Festival 2008, and featuring the voices of co-founders Sophie Thomas, Sarah Johnson and Anne Chick, and the UK Design Council’s Chief Executive David Kester, here’s a short film about Greengaged – the sustainable design hub. …
Singapore, for sustainability concerned urbanites (read: sustainites), has always been a Xanadu (all bubble gum-related, bamboo flogging aside) . Its 3-Dimensional garden city layout and decades long commitment to greening their city-state has been a model for other urban cores around the world. It has now undertaken Gardens by the Bay an internationally significant, orchid-inspired, pleasure dome that is not only a marina complex, and business and cultural venue but a model of highly technical integrated ecological…

Who cares what Obama and Oprah think? If Tokyo gets the 2016 Olympic games, they’ll build this stadium powered entirely by the sun. In fact, Tokyo’s whole bid is geared around creating an efficient, low-impact (in the environmental sense) event. From Inhabitat:
On top of the solar stadium, Tokyo will work to reuse current facilities and rework them, rather than building brand new facilities which requires the use of virgin resources and more energy during construction.…

Imagine if teachers gave out grades on the first day of school based on students’ promises of how hard they each plan to study. Oddly, we use this backward system to grade green buildings in the United States.
LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the certification system created by the U.S.…
In the 20th century, the titans of global business were better known for their acumen than for their generosity. Indeed, the phrases we’ve associated with business—“cutthroat,” “dog-eat-dog”—simply don’t mesh with, say, a Creative Commons approach to sharing. But if the past decade has taught us anything about the business of technology, it’s that the open-source movement keeps delivering—Linux, Wikipedia, Mozilla; the list goes on. And if we’re going…
In 2005, Wal-Mart was a piñata that liberal critics loved to bash, owing to a litany of sins ranging from low wages to union busting to encouraging sprawl. So when Lee Scott, the CEO at the time, bounded onto the stage at Wal-Mart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, and announced that energy-efficiency would be “at the heart of the company,” it seemed…
