    Emerging City Innovation

    00:00 / 00:00 00:00

Most of the world’s population now lives in cities. How can we make sure these urban centers are good homes for humanity? Cities from Bogotá and Rio de Janeiro to Seoul are leading the way, using fresh ideas to reduce pollution and waste; provide efficient, clean transportation; and support biodiversity.

The United States Is a Food Wasteland

We throw away enough food to feed the entire world. A new book tries to find a solution.

When it comes to food, Americans are the undisputed champions of one thing: trash. We waste food in volumes that it defies the imagination. New York City alone has an annual surplus of about 50 million pounds of food. Ten years ago, the United States Department of Agriculture estimated that more than 96 billion pounds of edible food…

Results from MIT’s Trash Tracking Experiment

Back in July, researchers at MIT’s SENSEable City lab launched an experiment: They’d tag thousands of pieces of trash in New York and Seattle with wireless transmitters and map their migrations so you could watch the peregrinations of that used paper cup through the city’s waste removal system.

Their idea was that this kind of tracking was the first step in exposing people to a product’s “removal chain” and maybe even making 100 percent recycling a…

    Mister Trash Can

    00:00 / 00:00 00:00

While carbon emissions may be the current cause célèbre of the environmental movement, let’s not forget the more tangible waste products we are unleashing upon the earth. Annually, households and businesses throw out 251 million tons of trash. And while, not shockingly, the major offenders are industries such as mining, everyday American consumers are responsible for five pounds of trash a day. We’re resolving to watch our wastelines in 2009.

Baby Steps to Producing Less Garbage: The Sigg (or Other Waterbottle)

This is not a new idea here, but it’s been fairly revolutionary for me, so I thought I’d share:

I emerged from this New Year’s break with the resolve to get into a few pretty tangible resolutions, one of which was to try to cut down on how much trash I produce. I didn’t feel like I had been out of control, I just liked the idea of deliberately making less. Step one for me has…

    E-Waste PSA: High-tech Trash

If the transition from 386 to 486 resonates loudly in your heart strings, then you have some idea of how far we’ve come the past fifteen years or so. Of course, the seemingly exponential acceleration of tech improvements presents a fair share of problems--problems that extend beyond your feelings of..
