Michael Mukasey's confirmation hearings for Attorney General demonstrated the Orwellian willingness of some to care more about what we call "torture" than about what is actually torturous.Mukasey wouldn't say whether waterboarding is constitutional. All he would say is that "if it's torture, then it's not constitutional."He'd presumably say the same thing about thumbscrews, or the rack: if they're torture they're not constitutional. Can we draw and quarter people? Yep, as long as we say it's not torture. Not very reassuring.Anyway, there's a new Anti-Torture Act circulating around congress.
