The Deadliest Countries for Journalists
Before the recent death on May 27 of Yara Abbas, a female Syrian correspondent for the pro-government TV channel Al-Ikhbariya, at least four other journalists had been killed since the start of the Syrian uprising. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, this ranks Syria as one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists in 2012.
In fact, journalists from across the world have found themselves in a very dangerous profession. Whether reporting from their home country with heavy censorship such as Abbas or documenting conflict areas that are thousands of miles from their home, 985 journalists have been murdered globally from 1992 up until May 2013. While pursuing critical but often controversial issues in oppressive landscapes, journalists ranging from reporters to photographers have been killed while on the job. Where has it been most dangerous for media workers to perform their jobs and are their killers being brought to justice?
