Porn Stars Keep Clothes On for Money

"We work hard to entertain you, and arouse you," says Alektra Blue, in a new (clothed) PSA from porn stars hurt by internet piracy.

"We work hard to entertain you, and arouse you," says Alektra Blue, performer, while explaining why you should pay for porn in a new PSA. The longer version of the argument goes something like this.

Everyone who makes their living off of the internet owes a small debt of gratitude to the porn industry. Like it or not, adult sites charted the course for how to monetize online content long before other industries believed in the potential of e-commerce. Now file sharing and You Tube-like sites are putting the old guard pornographers out of business.

Naturally, those innovative producers decided to make a video lamenting their plight. To grab some attention, they're keeping their clothes on and crying copyright foul. Some of the comments on the You Tube page are pretty hilarious. My favorite makes a clever economic analysis of the situation with a note on comparative advantage.

Anyway, the pornographers aren't just asking for sympathy with You Tube pleas. In April, distributors started employing digital fingerprinting and other technologies to catch counterfeiters. At first the plan was to put on suits and head to court for a bevvy of lawsuits. But what seems to be happening is that the "tube" sites that were stealing income from the Ron Jeremys of the world are now teaming up with them, and blocking the copyrighted content, or sharing income from it. That doesn't address the problem of home made competitors, but its an important step towards reclaiming their (copy)rights as far as Alektra Blue is concerned.

For the absolute most edutaining video on the scope of internet porn traffic, here's GOOD's own transparency production on the topic.
