The Plastiki Completes Its Trans-Pacific Journey

Last year we wrote about the David de Rothschild-led Plastiki expedition—whose name recalls Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 trans-Pacific journey on the Kon-Tiki raft—in which a team built a boat out of 12,500 recycled plastic bottles and sailed it across the Pacific Ocean. As you can see in this video from ITN World, the Plastiki has, after four months at sea, completed an 8,000-mile voyage from San Francisco to Australia's Sydney Harbour, which was meant to call attention to the polluted Pacific Gyre and advocate a smarter approach to using resources like plastic.

The Plastiki site has all sorts of media—videos, posts, photos—that tell the story of trip and illuminate the science behind it.
