Make Your Own Meals: Roast Some Salty Snacks #30DaysofGOOD

Do away with those store-bought pouches of blistered peanuts. Roast raw nuts using your own flavor combinations.

Things are easier said than done, or so the old adage goes, and we couldn't agree more. That's why we do The GOOD 30-Day Challenge (#30DaysofGOOD), a monthly attempt to live better. Our challenge for June? Make your own meals.


Those plastic pouches of blistered peanuts and spicy cashews at the corner store might seem cheap. But they’re a rip-off when compared to how inexpensive (and fun) it is to buy raw nuts in bulk and cook them using your own flavor combinations. Today we’re going to do away with store-bought salty snacks by roasting some of our own.

There are several variations on roasting nuts. But these simple steps are my go-to recipe:

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Toast the spice of your choice in a saucepan for about 30 seconds, then add a couple tablespoons of oil or butter. Toss the nuts in a bowl and cover them with this flavored fat, add salt, then lay them out on a baking sheet. Slide the tray in the oven for about 20 minutes, checking them every so often to make sure they don’t burn.

When they’re done, remove the nuts from the oven and let them cool thoroughly. Roasted nuts only gain their crunch after cooling down to room temperature.

Here are a couple classic flavor combinations to start from, but why stick to the script? Make the flavor you’ve always wished you could find at the supermarket.
