Tumblr’s Transgender Community Creates Vanity Fair Covers of Their Own

Caitlyn Jenner’s experience isn’t everyone’s, so Tumblr users are using #MyVanityFairCover to tell their own stories.

When Caitlyn Jenner made it to the cover of Vanity Fair this week, the internet nearly collapsed from the coverage. Her cover was a breakthrough, but advocates noted that her story isn’t representative of everyone in the trans community. So a group of transgender Tumblr users, who don’t have Jenner’s level of wealth and access, came up with a brilliant idea: they would make their own Vanity Fair covers, but instead of Caitlyn’s face, substitute their own.

The Internet exploded yesterday with news that Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, had made it to the cover of Vanity Fair. But even news organizations that were “trying” to report the news “objectively” (heavy emphasis on the ironic quotes) misgendered Caitlyn, referring to her with only male pronouns. So a Twitter bot, named @she_not_he, jumped in with a solution: every time Caitlyn was referred to as “he/him,” the bot would automatically tweet a correction.

He's on the cover of the February issue of Vanity Fair, he's hosting the 83rd Annual Academy Awards with actress Anne Hathaway, and he has a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of climber Aron Ralston in 127 Hours. But if that's not enough Franco for you, he's also designing a college course on, well, himself.

"Master Class: Editing James Franco...with James Franco" will be offered by Columbia College Hollywood. Unfortunately, not just anybody can sign up for the course. Only 12 of the best editing students at the private film school will be selected to participate.
