With regular gasoline now averaging $3.60 a gallon nationally—up from a 2010 average of $2.84—car buyers are thinking more about fuel economy than they were last year. But replacing a large vehicle with a much smaller one is further than many buyers are going.

Maybe there's life for print publications after all—or at least an afterlife. Nike just released the Women's Premium Print Pack, a limited edition set of three shoe styles, all made using shredded magazines.

The pack contains the Flash Macro Premium, the Blazer Mid Premium, and the Air Rift Premium. While the shoes have regular soles, strings, and other components, the main material used in each is a kind of laminated, stitched fabric created from old glossies. Unfortunately, you may have to travel outside the states to get them: Nike says they will only be available in Europe, China, and "select emerging markets."

Fifteen Fashion Addicts Quit Shopping for One Year

For the Free Fashion Challenge, 15 unlikely anti-consumers will refrain from buying clothes for one year.


For the past few years, Buy Nothing Day has served as a quiet rejoinder to a day (and a season) marred by the worst of consumer culture. Even if Black Friday isn't the year's biggest shopping day, it is a nice occasion for staging a widespread effort of non-participation. But what happens afterward? Might there be a better way to transform our shopping habits?

Indeed there might. Back on November 11, a group of unlikely anti-consumers launched the Free Fashion Challenge, in which 15 self-described "fashion addicts" pledged to refrain from buying clothes for an entire year. For the next 12 months, participants will blog about their experiences, hold swap parties, and engage in all sorts of "assignments" online.

Now that Black Friday is over, it's time to relive the craziness with the Picture Black Friday photo project. Every year, the Picture Black Friday website issues an open call for images of the post-Thanksgiving consumer chaos. The goal of the project, conceived by the New York-based photographer John Saponara, is to "give photographers around the country an outlet to share their images on consumerism, the turbulent economic times we live in, and the mass hysteria that retailers and large corporations feed the American buying public."

The image above, by Sandy Carson, is last year's winner—a photo of wraithlike bargain hunters waiting to get a deal on a mattress. You can see all the 2009 finalists here. This year, Picture Black Friday is accepting submissions through December 5.
