NYPD Permanently Assigns 350 Officers to Patrol the City with Machine Guns (UPDATED)

NYPD Police Commissioner Bill Bratton mentions protests as a reason to assign more police using automatic weapons.

At a recent Police Foundation event in New York City, police commissioner Bill Bratton announced plans to permanently assign 350 police officers to patrol the city while armed with machine guns and rifles, while searching for “possible terrorist attacks.”

A trip on a Bolt Bus and several chilling posts to Instagram later, Brinsley ambushed two NYPD officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, killing the men as they sat in their squad car eating lunch, before turning his weapon on himself.

A perfect example of this would be what took place earlier in the week, before the press conference. Obama hinted at nominating NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly to head the Department of Homeland Security. This is troublesome for the obvious reason. Kelly has been a long-time advocate and firm supporter of the stop and frisk policies used by NYPD to, among other things, get weapons off the streets. The problem is that these policies don't produce the desired outcomes.
