Winner: Doodle "Something Good in the World"

We received hundreds of submissions for our latest doodle project. See the three winners and a selection of the best runners up.

Last month GOOD and Cole Haan partnered to challenge you all with the latest Doodle project, "Doodle Something Good in the World." Submissions ranged from very personal views on the world, to topical news that everyone could related to.

As a reminder, our panel of judges included me, members of GOOD's editorial department, and Cole Haan, and the group was tasked with picking the top three illustrations. All three winners were eligible to receive a GOOD T-Shirt and Cole Haan gift certificates ($500 for first prize, $250 for second, and $100 for third).

We're pleased to announce the three winners this round are Tobie Roach, Dominic Abbate and Jisoo Kang. Please see their amazing work below.

Michael Sheen bought $1 million of debt for 900 strangers just to teach greedy banks a lesson

Michael Sheen is best known for playing angels and vampires on screen, but for 900 people in South Wales, he’s become a very real savior. The acclaimed actor, famous for roles in Good Omens and Masters of Sex, has made headlines for a massive act of financial rebellion: he personally purchased—and then completely forgave—over £1 million ($1.29 million) of local debt.

In 2021, Sheen famously declared himself a “not-for-profit actor," pledging to use his earnings to fund social causes like this and the Welsh National Theatre. Now, a Channel 4 documentary, Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway, has revealed exactly how he’s putting that money to work.

The unbelievable 1982 Genesis reunion with Peter Gabriel was to save him from crushing debt

When the final curtain fell on Genesis’ farewell tour at London’s O2 Arena in March 2022, it marked the end of an era for the legendary prog-pop band. The core trio of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks had reunited for one last run, but there was a notable figure watching from the audience: original frontman Peter Gabriel.

Gabriel, who co-founded the band in 1967 before leaving in 1975, chose not to perform, viewing his attendance simply as a "rite of passage."

The super small social rules that people say are 'absolutely impossible' to follow

I suffer from situational awkwardness—a self-diagnosis, mind you, but one I feel pretty confident about, given the evidence. My ability to follow social norms fluctuates depending on the setting: the ages of the people I’m around, the general vibe of the people I’m around, how well we know each other, even the physical environment. (Is this a home game or an away game?) Basically, if I’m visiting a stranger’s house and meeting their rowdy kids for the first time, I will probably be a different person than if I’m hanging around my parents at a restaurant. I envy people who always seem comfortable in their own skin.

It’s probably no shock, then, that I find it difficult to follow certain social rules. (This also extends to the concept of unwritten rules—let’s all get on the same page so I can know exactly whom and how much I should be tipping, okay?) At least I’m not the only one who gets tripped up every once in a while. In a recent thread, strangers shared the seemingly minor situations that they find challenging.

Scientists found a brilliantly simple hack for spotting a liar

Detecting a lie often feels like a gut instinct, relying on vague cues like eye contact or a shaky voice. But for truly skilled liars, these mannerisms are often controlled and managed. Fortunately, scientists have discovered a simple, surprisingly effective method that exploits the one thing even the best liars can’t hide: mental effort, per a report from Indy100.

The new method is based on the principle that deceit requires significant mental energy, or "cognitive load." According to recent research, asking someone to perform an additional cognitive task during questioning significantly increases the chances of detecting the lie. Experts from the University of Portsmouth found that overloading a liar makes it nearly impossible to sustain a convincing, plausible story.
