Transparency: Who is Coming to America?

Immigration may have taken a back seat during the financial crisis, but the issue still needs resolving. While illegal immigrants sneaking over the border is still a primary concern, it’s good to know who came to our country legally, and from where. Our latest Transparency is a look at the 20 countries from which the most people came to America in 2008, how many immigrants already had family here, and how many received asylum when they arrived on our shores.

I would like to see a similar infographic with info about the percentage of a nations population arriving at the US. another interesting data is how these immigrants are divided according to education level.
Is this immigrants only, or are you counting everyone who entered the United States during 2008?
The duplicate label for Mexico should probably read India.avishek
Unknown, how could this be. Could somebody please define unknown for me?
close the borders
64 refugees from the UK? Fleeing persecution from the rain??
Why would you call Mexicans illegals. They are just seeking a better life. And fleeing a corrupt puppet government put in place my the U.S. If America had stood out of Mexican affairs, Mexico would be receiving aid from Cuba and Venezuela by now. How come we don’t see hundreds of Venezuelans crossing the border illegally!
What I would like to see is hear someone thinking about “breaks” for legal immigrants pursuing a green card, they pay their taxes and have done everything properly, however green card paperwork for legal workers under H, L or other Visa are full of obstacles.I do not see why illegals can get a free pass but legals have to face so many problems
Note that Spanish speakers add up to 346,804 within the top 20 nations, plus, I’m sure, many other Spanish speakers inclided in the ‘Other countries’ category. What is the total? Percentages? Sources? It’s a great graph, but a small footnote linking to notes and/or sources wouldn’t hurt.
“ How come we don’t see hundreds of Venezuelans crossing the border illegally! “because Venezuela shares no border with the US.
As to the first “Anonymous,” maybe the country should have closed the borders before YOUR ancestors got here. Then we intelligent Americans wouldn’t have to deal with idiots who somehow think that immigration is a bad thing, except, of course, in their own case.
Since the blogs shifted around, I should refer more specifically to the “close the borders” comment made by an anonymous person earlier.
^ I’m guessing “unknown” are the people who come here and don’t know which country they cam from?
188, 015 from Mexico, my foot! What good are these graphics if they are so inaccurate about illegal immigrants?
Gee, I’m not represented here (France)!
People, you have NO IDEA how f**ing hard the USCIS makes for for people to legally immigrate in the US. It’s a process that lasts for several years, several thousands of dollars, a great deal of hardship if you get separated from your loved one by the process, and a lot of frustration dealing with the obtuse USCIS employees. Not to mention about 20 pounds worth of paperwork (litterally – this is not an exageration). So… I agree that illegals should not get a free pass. It really is like working for money vs stealing it. “Same difference”.
As a Kenyan, two things stand out: the colors on the Kenyan flag are a little off, and that we rank third on the number of refugees and asylees (after China and Cuba). I had no idea.
Go back home
You are either legal or illegegal. There is no grey area. Coming here in the dark of the night should put you at the end of the line when you are caught.
Gotta agree with you if cross illegally you should be TAKEN OUT on the spot. If you come here illegally you are breaking the law which constitutes your removal from this country. No you shouldnt be given any rights, matter of fact you should be eliminated permanantly. TIRED of paying tax dollars on illegals and looking at graffitti left behind by these losers that shouldnt be here. You are bringing down our economy and lowering our property value. Stay in mexico you are not wanted here.
There is time to start calling things for its proper name, this stats are about United States of America, and not America. This is a large continent from Canada to Chile. America does not belong to U.S.
I have to agree with the anonymous posted at 3:11 AM. Take’Em Out!!
And America is not owned by MEXICO!!!!! GO HOME
Better wake up people …. oil them up and get ready… the Messycans are coming!!
REFUGEES FROM CANADA??? Im Canadian & we take in everything… I cant imagine why we’d have refugees coming from Canada to the U.S.
“Who is coming to America”? Is Peru coming to America? Peru is IN America, but Peruvians may be going to the United States of America. Amerigo Vespucci gave his name to a continent.
