By design, you’re not supposed to root for the villain. They’re the antagonist. They’re a character that’s supposed to show off the worst of people in their actions, attitude, or personality. But there are some bad guys that have a certain charisma that makes you the devil’s advocate. “Sure, he lied, cheated, killed, etc. and I can’t condone his actions but I can understand his point.”

Japan’s flourishing Ohitorisama culture crafts new dining experiences

Ohitorisama can have many meanings, but generally you can interpret the flair as an independent person or one customer going about an activity alone. The word started as a kind of disrespectful nod at unmarried women or those separated from her spouse. In 2001 a journalist Kumiko Iwashita wrote a book Ohitorisama that reclaimed the meaning of the word to honor and champion contemporary women who enjoy their alone time.

Ever since, Japan has been slowly catering to that solitary experience through single-customer-targeted-dining-experiences. The detail and creativity of this endeavor is awe inspiring and the Ohitorisama movement has enlisted single and solo exploring men too.

Paddle-boarding woman frees shark from rope with her bare hands in suspenseful video

Charity Clark was just enjoying a day of paddle-boarding with her friends off the coast of Florida when she saw something on the surface of the water. It was a shark caught in the fishing line. That’s when Charity went into action.

With her friend Cassie Bailey taking video with her phone, Charity reached into the water with her bare hands to untangle the shark from a rope attached to a crab trap buoy. While the shark remained motionless for a time, it snapped at Charity just as soon as she attempted to free the rope from its mouth. Charity dodged the lunge and, after a small struggle, was able to free the shark so it could swim away. Fortunately, both Charity and the shark weren’t hurt.

Breakthrough eco-friendly diapers are designed to eat themselves in landfills

As any parent knows, dealing with diapers is a dirty business. Aside from the unpleasant necessity of changing the child, there's the issue of dealing with and disposing of the used diapers and, subsequently, how they form mountains of additional trash in our landfills. This made the folks at HIRO Technologies ask themselves, “What if we made a diaper that could ‘eat’ itself away?”

This is how HIRO Technologies developed the HIRO MycoDigestible Diaper. Each diaper comes with a packet of plastic-eating mycelium fungi that will break down the diaper’s materials and consume it, not only completely decomposing the diaper but also enriching the soil on the landfill ground. All the parent has to do is place the packet into the diaper before taping it up and tossing it into the garbage can.

Canadian social worker does nationwide tour listening to people for free. Here's what they reveal.

There are times in which many people feel alone and isolated. They might need a friend or family member, but, for whatever reason, they can't approach them or don’t feel like they have such a connection. Others know they need a therapist to talk to them about their issues, but they can't afford one. While he’s a stranger and not a licensed counsellor, if you walk past Paul Jenkinson’s table, you can grab a seat and he’ll listen to whatever you want to talk about free of charge.

A retired social worker based in Nova Scotia, Canada, Jenkinson has decided to spend his golden years going from town to town nationwide with a folding table, two chairs, and a sandwich board sign that says, “You are not alone. I will listen.” So far, Jenkinson has graciously provided time to sit across from strangers who are willing to just speak their traumas, fears, concerns, and problems to him as he sips his coffee.

Radiohead's Thom Yorke was so inspired by Queen as a kid, he tried to build his own guitar

When Radiohead released their 1997 masterpiece "Paranoid Android," lots of critics compared the proggy, dizzying track to another six-minute rock epic: Queen's 1975 staple "Bohemian Rhapsody." The reference was inevitable, given the songs' similar length and musical ambition, but perhaps the connection is deeper than that. As Radiohead leader Thom Yorke has documented in various interviews over the years, he was massively influenced by Queen as a kid—to the point that, in his quest to emulate that band's guitarist, Brian May, he even tried to build his own instrument.

"I started playing when I was 7, 8. I was obsessed with Queen when 'Bohemian Rhapsody' came out," Yorke recalled during a 2019 appearance on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs. "I laid down in front of these big speakers in my friend’s house, and we just listened to 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' and at that point I decided, 'Yep, this is what I’m doing.' And then soon after that, I decided I was gonna do what Brian May did: build a guitar. It sort of worked, but it was literally rough-cut out with a saw. It was terrible. It really wasn't [impressive]. Shortly after that, my dad felt sorry for me and eventually bought me one."
