GOOD Pictures features work by a new photographer each week, with a focus on up-and-coming artists. It is curated by Stephanie Gonot and Jennifer Mizgata.

I see Charlie Engman not just as a photographer, but as a mad scientist who uses photography to explore color, shape and our perception of space. Charlie's work is vibrant and surprising, which may be a product of his interest in things other than photography. "I have always had a graphic and poetic—as opposed to historic or referential—interest in art and photography," he told the British Journal of Photography last year. "So in order to create successful images, I feel that I need to have an understanding of 'non art,' life that ostensibly operates outside of art’s canonized boundaries.”

Charlie uses his ever-inspiring blog, or "digital sketchbook," as a place to display his photography and visual experiments, seamlessly blending together personal and commercial work. You can find these images plus many more "small ideas, references, and works" on the blog, or you can view specific categories of work on his website.

When the final curtain fell on Genesis’ farewell tour at London’s O2 Arena in March 2022, it marked the end of an era for the legendary prog-pop band. The core trio of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks had reunited for one last run, but there was a notable figure watching from the audience: original frontman Peter Gabriel.

The super small social rules that people say are 'absolutely impossible' to follow

I suffer from situational awkwardness—a self-diagnosis, mind you, but one I feel pretty confident about, given the evidence. My ability to follow social norms fluctuates depending on the setting: the ages of the people I’m around, the general vibe of the people I’m around, how well we know each other, even the physical environment. (Is this a home game or an away game?) Basically, if I’m visiting a stranger’s house and meeting their rowdy kids for the first time, I will probably be a different person than if I’m hanging around my parents at a restaurant. I envy people who always seem comfortable in their own skin.

It’s probably no shock, then, that I find it difficult to follow certain social rules. (This also extends to the concept of unwritten rules—let’s all get on the same page so I can know exactly whom and how much I should be tipping, okay?) At least I’m not the only one who gets tripped up every once in a while. In a recent thread, strangers shared the seemingly minor situations that they find challenging.

Scientists found a brilliantly simple hack for spotting a liar

Detecting a lie often feels like a gut instinct, relying on vague cues like eye contact or a shaky voice. But for truly skilled liars, these mannerisms are often controlled and managed. Fortunately, scientists have discovered a simple, surprisingly effective method that exploits the one thing even the best liars can’t hide: mental effort, per a report from Indy100.

The new method is based on the principle that deceit requires significant mental energy, or "cognitive load." According to recent research, asking someone to perform an additional cognitive task during questioning significantly increases the chances of detecting the lie. Experts from the University of Portsmouth found that overloading a liar makes it nearly impossible to sustain a convincing, plausible story.
