GOOD Does Sundance

This January, GOOD’s heading to Utah with not one, but two documentary shorts screening at Sundance. “Atomic Alert” and “Internet Censorship” are two of 96 short films culled from 5,632 submissions (that’s an acceptance rate of 1.7%, but who’s counting?) that will be screened in Park City January 15 – 25. We’re pleased as punch to be included in a program featuring work by directors such as Kenneth Anger, Don Hertzfeldt, and Oscar-winner Jessica Yu.…

Hippo Rollers

Hippo Rollers

In rural Africa, women spend 26% of their time fetching water, often walking for miles with heavy buckets balanced on their heads. That’s time that could be spent going to school, working outside the home, or teaching their children. The Hippo Water Roller eases the burden by allowing women to transport five times as much water with much less physical effort. In our latest LOOK video, we examine the impact of the rollers on one…

Pollen Bots

Pollen Bots

Seasonal allergy sufferers, rejoice! Japanese scientists have deployed an army of anthropomorphic pollen sensors across the country in an effort to aid the 15 million Japanese allergic to pollen. These Pollen Bots’ eyes change color depending on the pollen count so allergy sufferers can plan their outdoor activities accordingly. For those of us with hay fever, that’s nothing to sneeze at.

Internet Censorship

Sex. Ass. Falun gong. Chances are, if you’re reading this right now, you don’t live in Yemen, Myanmar, or China. Internet censorship can take many forms, from restricting private internet access to blocking searches for politically volatile keywords. Exercise your internet freedom by taking a look.. Hog Hunting

A plague of feral hogs has descended on the American South, leaving a trail of porcine devastation in their wake. To combat the invasion, some hunters are forsaking more traditional prey and training their sights on these destructive, ferocious, decidedly less cute cousins of Babe. Intrigued by a new.. Circle Rules Football

If you’ve never heard of Circle Rules Football, you’re not alone. This whimsical game, played on a circular field with a yoga ball, was created by avant garde theater students two years ago as a final class project. Since then, this high-energy sport has bounced out of the classroom and onto the playing field, winning over converts from Maine to Florida and evolving with each game played. Is it a legitimate sport with staying power…

GOOD Business: Greyston Bakery

How good can one brownie be? Greyston Bakery’s brownies are delicious, sure, but they also help to alleviate poverty within the community of Yonkers. With a progressive, open-door hiring policy, Greyston welcomes people who may have faced barriers to employment before. The profits from the bakery are funneled back into the community, funding programs such as after school care, low income housing, and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. A GOOD Business video.

The yearly flooding helps keep the surface flat, eroding high points and filling in low points.  But my understanding is that, other than that, the flooding has no bearing on the calibration and that they normally try to calibrate during the dry season anyway.
