The Los Angeles Departments of City Planning (LA DCP), the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LA DOT) and GOOD/Corps, an affiliate of GOOD, have teamed up for LA/2B, a new initiative putting street use and alternative transit back in the creative imagination of Angelenos. It’s an opportunity for the Los Angeles community to weigh in on the mobility issues that affect our daily lives and offer sound solutions for the future.

Antibiotic resistance could undo a century of medical progress – but four advances are changing the story

Imagine going to the hospital for a bacterial ear infection and hearing your doctor say, “We’re out of options.” It may sound dramatic, but antibiotic resistance is pushing that scenario closer to becoming reality for an increasing number of people. In 2016, a woman from Nevada died from a bacterial infection that was resistant to all 26 antibiotics that were available in the United States at that time.

The U.S. alone sees more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant illnesses each year. Globally, antimicrobial resistance is linked to nearly 5 million deaths annually.

South Korean scientists invent spray-on medical powder that can stop wounds from bleeding in a second

Whenever someone gets a wound, it’s best to stop the bleeding as quickly as possible. This is especially true when the wound happens while in a disaster, an impoverished area, or a war zone when it's especially difficult to staunch bleeding. Fortunately, a group of scientists in South Korea may have solved this problem to buy people time until they can make it to a hospital.

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) have developed a spray-on powder that can stop bleeding in one second. The powder from the spray is able to absorb the blood from the wound into a hydrogel regardless of the wound’s size, depth, or unevenness. This hydrogel doesn’t just stop the bleeding, it creates a barrier that can seal the wound almost immediately. While this invention was intended for military use, the researchers hope it can be applied to civilian needs.
