Making Sense of the Financial Mess

  • Posted by: GOOD
  • on December 10, 2008 at 1:29 am

We tried to make sense of the financial mess we’re in. As you can see, we couldn’t come up with anything satisfying, so we want your help. We’re offering $500 to the best global finance infographic we receive, as judged by a prominent economist.

UPDATE  (3/18/09): Kai Ryssdal has picked the winner. Congratulations to Jonathan Jarvis (first place) and Karen Ong (honorable mention). You can read more about Ryssdal’s picks here.

UPDATE (3/11/09):  We couldn’t imagine a better judge for this project than Kai Ryssdal, the host of Marketplace, and that’s who we got. We’ll have Ryssdal’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place picks (plus comments) next Wednesday, March 18.

UPDATE (3/2/09): We’re blown away by the quality of these submissions. We’ve stopped accepting new ones at this point and judging is underway. We’ll be highlighting some of our favorite entries in the GOOD blog over the next week and we’ll be back here with an update on judging next Wednesday, March 11.

i’m interested in doing the graphics, but research for this would be 10+ hours — anyone want to do the research and i’ll do the graphic (split prize)?

Anonymous, I like your offer. Though it might not be me accepting (I work here at GOOD), how would one get in touch with you if they wanted to take you up on that?

    Jonathan’s submission is GREAT!!

Jonathan’s is nice and looks good, but it is also a 4 page spread.  What surprises me is that only one, Karen’s, has really given any GLOBAL impact caused by our greed.  Good work to everyone though.  When will more be posted?

Jarvis’ submission is a nice print version of his video work.  Clocking in at just over 11 min, the run time is a bit intimidating but any quicker and key points would get lost.  I often found myself referencing his work when trying to fill gaps in other submissions.  Stellar work by all.  Thanks.

When you judge the contest guidelines closely, I think Cypher 13 takes it. They’re all good though!

it’s interesting that Rahardjo finds comic sans to be an appropriate font for a financial crisis (or ever, really). it looks like the information included is well thought out, though.

Karen’s definitely has the easiest-to-follow and best representation of the global meltdown. I liked Cypher13’s design, but it had too much pictures and not enough explanation. I didn’t feel like I made 100% sense of his, although the design is good.

Jonathan Jarvis’s infographic is clearly the best. It is the easiest to follow, is free of misspellings and grammatical errors, and doesn’t use Comic Sans as its typeface.

    Jeff Jarvis’ video is amazing!

I agree with the comment about Cyber13 having great graphics but not a lot of clarification. You almost have to already know about the financial mess in order to understand what the graphics are showing. It’s lovely to look at but not the best solution. Emilia’s entry seems to have a balance of both- good, clean graphics and the best explanation.
