The BBC reports that Nato is shutting down fast food restaurants like Pizza Hut and Burger King in its Afghanistan bases:
"This is a warzone, not an amusement park," the blog written by Command Sgt Maj Michael T Hall says. "In order to accommodate the troop increase and get refocussed on the mission in hand, we need to cut back on some of the non-essentials."Supplying non-essential luxuries to big bases like Bagram and Kandahar makes it harder to get essential items to combat outposts and forward operating bases, where troops fighting every day need to be resupplied with ammunition, food and water."
I'm not a nutritionist, but I'd think the last thing soldiers need is a bunch of Whoppers. The idea of using precious resources to cart fast food across Afghanistan into Bagram reminds me of the USO Playboy scene in Apocalypse Now. Now if only they'd do this in hospitals.Photo of a U.S. Army Burger King in Iraq from thorninpaw.com
