Every December, hordes of artists, galleries, collectors, performers, P. Diddy, and anyone else with a taste for fun, parties, and art-viewing, descend upon Miami, Florida for Art Basel, arguably the biggest and most expansive global art event of the year. Officially opening to the public today and running through the weekend, it’s like Spring Break for art lovers. Now in it’s 11th year, Basel started as a single fair catering to international buyers looking to purchase art and grow their collections. Today, Art Basel has spawned over 20 satellite art fairs (focusing on everything from photography, design, and emerging artists), countless gallery exhibitions, pop-ups, public installations, performances, and happenings during the week.

While it’s the definitive place to see the best artwork from around the globe, in recent years it’s also become a place for art to overlap with music, fashion, design, food, and drink. For better or for worse, art critic Anthony Haden-Guest once summarized, “Art fairs are the new disco.”

Below are a few of the things going on this week:

Wynwood Walls takes over the warehouse district and Arts District that is Wynwood, Miami. A mural project set out to revitalize the neighborhood, street and graffiti artists like Faile, Futura, Ron English and Os Gemos (below) have been turning walls and doors in the area into colorful canvases since 2009.

New York-based artist Desi Santiago has taken over the Lords South Beach Hotel with a building-sized commission, in a work called “The Black Lords.” He’s literally transforming the entire hotel into a “ravenous black dog named Gypsy” which will tell fortunes and respond to visitors questions with sound, lasers, and smoke.

While there will be a lot of revelry throughout the week, it’s worth remembering that many of the New York galleries participating in the fairs and events in Miami, were directly hit by Hurricane Sandy. Some are still picking up the pieces after having entire archives of artworks, publications, and physical spaces decimated. To this effect, Volkswagon and MoMA PS1will be hosting a benefit with DJ sets by members of Animal Collective and Chromeo. All proceeds going to Rockaway Waterfront.

For those without deep pockets, Visionaire magazine has partnered with online fashion sites Net-a-Porter and Mr. Porter to open a “FREE STORE” at Miami Beach SLS Hotel. The store is an interactive art installation by Jonathan Horowitz, where “customers” are asked to bring “stuff you can’t use and take stuff away that you can.” This barter style swap will be a welcome break from the otherwise capitalist week, and you could end up with items from everyone from Michael Stipe to Maurizio Cattelan to Marilyn Minter.

We’ll be bringing you a couple highlights each day and at the end of the week, we’ll bring you GOOD’s crowd sourced wrap up—a selection of images sent to us from the folks on the ground in sunny Florida.

If you’re there, Tweet @GOOD a pic with the hashtag #GOODArt or email yasha@goodinc.com and we’ll credit you in the wrap up.

  • Man’s dog suddenly becomes protective of his wife, Internet clocks the reason right away

Reddit user Girlfriendhatesmefor’s three-year-old pitbull, Otis, had recently become overprotective of his wife. So he asked the online community if they knew what might be wrong with the dog.

“A week or two ago, my wife got some sort of stomach bug,” the Reddit user wrote under the subreddit /r/dogs. “She was really nauseous and ill for about a week. Otis is very in tune with her emotions (we once got in a fight and she was upset, I swear he was staring daggers at me lol) and during this time didn’t even want to leave her to go on walks. We thought it was adorable!”

His wife soon felt better, butthe dog’s behavior didn’t change.

Girlfriendhatesmefor began to fear that Otis’ behavior may be an early sign of an aggression issue or an indication that the dog was hurt or sick.

So he threw a question out to fellow Reddit users: “Has anyone else’s dog suddenly developed attachment/aggression issues? Any and all advice appreciated, even if it’s that we’re being paranoid!”

The most popular response to his thread was by ZZBC.

Any chance your wife is pregnant?

The potential news hit Girlfriendhatesmefor like a ton of bricks. A few days later, Girlfriendhatesmefor posted an update and ZZBC was right!

“The wifey is pregnant!” the father-to-be wrote. “Otis is still being overprotective but it all makes sense now! Thanks for all the advice and kind words! Sorry for the delayed reply, I didn’t check back until just now!”

    Redditors responded with similar experiences.

Anecdotal I know but I swear my dog knew I was pregnant before I was. He was super clingy (more than normal) and was always resting his head on my belly.

So why do dogs get overprotective when someone is pregnant?

Jeff Werber, PhD, president and chief veterinarian of the Century Veterinary Group in Los Angeles, told Health.com that “dogs can also smell the hormonal changes going on in a woman’s body at that time.” He added the dog may “not understand that this new scent of your skin and breath is caused by a developing baby, but they will know that something is different with you—which might cause them to be more curious or attentive.”

The big lesson here is to listen to your pets and to ask questions when their behavior abruptly changes. They may be trying to tell you something, and the news may be life-changing.

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories

Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.

While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.

When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.

Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
