In July 2011, Dr. Lukas Wartman whose life was threatened by leukemia, achieved an improbable remission when genetic researchers at Washington University tailored a treatment by comparing the sequencing of his healthy and cancerous cells.

Recognizing the potential of this new approach for fighting cancer, IBM is now on a mission to apply advances in big data analytics and emerging cloud-based cognitive systems with the genomics science that has emerged that could help doctors accurately diagnose cancer and create personalized cancer treatment plans for millions of patients around the world. Using cloud platforms, IBM is hoping to scale solutions and reduce the time it takes to find the right treatment for a patient from weeks and months to days and minutes.

IBM researcher, Ajay Royyuru, Director of Computational Biology Center at the T.J. Watson Research Center predicts that in five years, doctors will routinely use your DNA to keep you well. Cancer could then be treated on a DNA level in both the patient and tumor, at a scale and speed never before possible.

Every year IBM makes predictions about 5 technology innovations that stand to change the way we live within the next 5 years. This set of predictions, narrated by Mo Rocca, is all about personalization. See the other predictions at http://www.ibm.com/5in5.
