It's no secret massive waste pervades the health-care industry. Some of that waste stems from unnecessarily complex interactions between doctors, patients, and insurance companies. By making the entire process hospital care more efficient, we could help limit that waste. By using electronic medical records and streamlining procedures, hospitals could save billions of dollars, which could in turn be spent on better care.

A Mexican priest turned to pro wrestling to build an orphanage and a legacy

In 1976, young priest Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez found an unconventional way to raise funding for a local orphanage in Mexico. By day, he would don his priest robes to serve his community. But at night, he would exchange those robes for tights and a mask, performing as a professional wrestler and use whatever money he earned to help raise the impoverished children under his care. For four decades, Gutiérrez Benítez would be known by another name: the luchador Fray Tormenta.

Born in 1945 in San Agustín Metzquititlán, Mexico, Gutierrez Benitez’s childhood was one of struggle, drug addiction, and crime. “I started when I was 11 or 12. In this country [Mexico], drugs have always been very present,” he said. “I did everything—marijuana and cocaine every day, even mushrooms from time to time. A little after that, I started heroin. By the time I turned 18, I had already become a criminal and a thief. I even worked as an actor and clown in a circus, but I spent everything on my doses, and I needed more, so I started stealing.”

Man lives with artificial titanium heart for 105 days while awaiting donor transplant

An Australian man has made medical history, reportedly becoming the first person worldwide discharged from the hospital with a durable titanium artificial heart implant. The patient, an unidentified man in his 40s who was experiencing severe heart failure, volunteered as the first Australian recipient of a BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart—living for 105 days with the implant while he awaited a donor transplant.

Melbourne’s Monash University, who led the study as part of their Artificial Heart Frontiers Program, says the man received the artificial heart during surgery in November 2024 at Sydney Hospital St. Vincent’s. He stayed in the ICU for a few weeks, followed by a period of observation in the ward, and was discharged in early February before receiving his donor heart transplant on March 6. He's now "recovering well."

A new scientific finding is revealing that your mood could be influenced by what you eat. No, it’s not showing the stereotypical ice cream or pizza helping a person through a break-up like in the movies (although, anecdotally, it could help a person in a funk). It’s showing that eating citrus fruits could help prevent bouts of depression.

A Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School study is showing that eating citrus fruits promotes the bacteria in the human to produce the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. These neurotransmitters are used to help elevate and moderate a person’s mood. The results are such that they say that eating a medium-sized orange per day could help reduce the risk of depression by 20%.

New MIT study says 'quantified proof' Earth's ozone layer is healing

In 1985, a sizable hole in our planet’s ozone layer was discovered in the Antarctic region, causing ultraviolet radiation from the sun to impact the Earth without the ozone acting as a buffer. Since then, scientists and world leaders have posited theories as how to heal up the hole. Today, a new study led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is not only showing that the hole is healing, but it is healing due to mankind’s worldwide efforts.

The ozone layer helps act as a filter or buffer for ultraviolet (UV) rays that come from the sun. While UV rays have some positive effects, there are serious problems when the biosphere is overexposed, according to NASA. Overexposure of UV rays caused by a weakened ozone layer causes issues in the production and yield of crops such as rice, soybeans, and corn. It not only disrupts our food sources, but how other plants and animals eat as overexposure can disrupt photosynthesis in certain plant life and reduce the population of phytoplankton in the ocean. Phytoplankton is not only a food source for many fish species, but also stores large amounts of carbon, which is also an environmental issue.
