Teacher gets glorious payback after school forced him to pay for a class trip himself

School excursions often provide unforgettable experiences and bonding opportunities for students, but for teachers, they can be loaded with logistical headaches. So when a teacher was asked to single-handedly finance a field trip—with zero compensation—Reddit user u/Unfunded_Teacher took to the platform to vent about this bizarre demand.

“Want me to pay out-of-pocket to take students to the zoo? Okay, but you’ll miss out on a killer photo shoot,” read the title of their Reddit post. In 2017, the teacher oversaw a class of 18 children, and a sudden curriculum change mandated a zoo visit. However, the school insisted that, since the budget had been set months before, the teacher would foot the entire bill for all 18 students.

Only 1 in 4 young adults are meeting the traditional milestone markers of adulthood

Some benchmark achievements represent the stage at which society recognizes an adult. A new study found that fewer than a quarter of young people were meeting these representative, traditional markers. With an ever-changing economy and fewer opportunities, some of these milestones are just unattainable. Combined with new social norms, people might not find them as important. Their happiness suggests it's all a big mess.

The U.S. Census Bureau shared a report exploring the changes in modern young adults reaching these 5 markers. The study focused on the challenges linked to uncertain economic downturns as well as attitudes toward the modern family experience. The 5 markers traditionally considered to achieve adulthood are: moving out of the parents' home, completing higher education, entering the workforce, marriage, and having children.

Man in his 30s recycles nearly half a million cans to earn a down payment on a house

In a particularly hilarious episode of Seinfeld, season seven’s "The Bottle Deposit," Kramer and mailman sidekick Newman hatch an ambitious scheme: accumulate an exorbitant amount of bottles and cans, transport them from New York to Michigan in a mail truck, and redeem the items for 10 cents each—double the going rate in their home state. Driving on a back road late at night, they even transform the road song "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" into a rallying cry: "We fill up with gas; we count up our cash!" Their plan, naturally, goes awry (it's a long story involving a deranged mechanic and JFK's golf clubs), but the core idea remains tantalizing: What if you could turn literal garbage into a windfall?

One Australian man, 36-year-old Damian Gordon, did precisely that. By patiently utilizing the regional "Return and Earn" program in New South Wales over seven years, he was able to turn nearly a half-million cans and bottles into roughly $45,000, partly funding a down payment on a two-bedroom house. The recycling program, which similarly offers 10 cents per eligible drink container, has a noble mission: reducing the volume of landfill and putting money "back into the pockets of the community."

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a movie star that accomplished the American dream in movie-like fashion. Starting from humble beginnings in Austria, he made his way to the United States for a better life, fame, and fortune, and eventually got elected into public office. The immigrant Arnie is proud of his adopted home. So, why does he have a bust of noted Soviet Union leader Vladimir Lenin in his mansion?

Well, the Lenin bust isn’t the only notorious statue Schwarzenegger has owned. He actually had several busts of “Stalin, Khrushchev, Andropov, Chernenko—every Russian leader but Brezhnev and Kosygin,” according to a 2015 Rolling Stone interview. His then-wife Maria Shriver told him to get rid of them, but he kept the one bust of Lenin. But why did he have them in the first place? And why keep the Lenin bust?

In major fertility breakthrough, scientists film first-ever embryo implantation

It has become increasingly common to wait until later in life to start having children. That means the oftentimes already-challenging process of conceiving often requires medical help. One of the more successful techniques is in vitro fertilization (IVF), an expensive process that often requires multiple attempts. In one attempt, researchers were able to capture, in real-time, a human embryo implanting itself on an artificial uterine wall.

This discovery can ultimately help doctors improve the success rates and mechanics behind IVF, meaning a higher likelihood of pregnancy for couples and individuals using the option. What's particularly cool and unique is that they created a new ex vivo implantation platform that allows high-resolution microscopy. It's like building a tree house to hide and watch birds in their natural habitat. In this instance, they built the trees too.

Prince broke a borrowed guitar with a wild onstage toss in 2013. But the story ended well.

When Prince took the stage, anything was possible—from feral, shirtless screaming to hall-of-fame guitar solos to the kind of destructive rock-star showmanship that few others would be willing to attempt. One of his signature moves was throwing his instrument—sometimes into the air, where, on one memorable occasion, it seemed to vanish completely; other times over to a technician waiting in the wings. Many of these guitars—including his "Cloud" axe, built by Dave Russan—suffered a fair amount of abuse. "He would always throw them to the roadie at the end of the show, and they weren’t always caught, so they’d have to be repaired often," Russan told Alternative Nation. "They were hard rock maple but couldn’t always stand up to that."

But that was Prince’s gear. Not the case in a case from 2013, when The Artist performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, having borrowed a guitar from "Captain" Kirk Douglas of house band The Roots. The wild promotional spot ended with a bold toss, a broken instrument, and a supremely bummed-out musician. But the story is even weirder than you might expect, and it led to a surprisingly happy ending.

Mechanic returns wallet to stranger 11 years after he lost it and it changes the man's life

It’s amazing how deeply simple acts of decency can impact a person. A small gesture of kindness has the ability to overwhelm a you in a big way. Such an example is when Ford mechanic Richard Guilford got a message from a stranger on Facebook saying that the wallet he lost eleven years ago was found in the most bizarre place.

Minnesota mechanic Chad Volk was trying to snap a filter box back into place after replacing the cooling fans on a 2015 Ford Edge that had 151,000 miles on it. Volk looked to see what the problem was and he found the culprit: a wallet that was sandwiched between the air filter box and the transmission.

Scientists stunned after discovering gigantic missing blob of water in the Atlantic Ocean

Scientists previously discovered a specific type of water mass called “Equatorial waters” in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Given the similarities in the Atlantic Ocean, they wondered if a similar water mass might exist there. In the fall of 2023, they discovered a large water blob in the Atlantic, which they named “Atlantic Equatorial Water.” Their detailed study was published in Geophysical Research Letters in a paper titled “Is There an Equatorial Water Mass in the Atlantic Ocean?”

According to the research paper, a “water mass” is defined as a body of water that originates in a particular region of the ocean and whose physical properties differ from that of the surrounding water. These properties include temperature, salinity, isotopic ratios, oxygen, silicate, nitrate, phosphate, etc. The study of these properties can offer insights into the oceanic circulation, mixing, and biochemical processes.
