Being a teacher can be difficult: low pay, long hours, and the many challenges students bring into the classroom. If our teachers are going to be effective educators, we need to do a better job of keeping them happy. But what would teachers like to change to make their work life better? These are some of their responses.

Gen Z is embracing non-digital activities more than Boomers.

Half of Americans say they've cut their screen time. And it's Gen Z leading the way, not Boomers.

A survey released in 2026 found that 50% of Americans say they’ve cut their screen time. Less time in front of phones, pads, laptops, televisions, everything. However, the generation leading the charge isn’t Boomers or Gen X, who have lived significantly longer without the Internet or social media, but the generation born into an already-online world.

Out of all the generations surveyed, Talker Research found that 63% of Gen Z made it a point to unplug and cut their screen time, followed by Millennials (57%), Gen X (42%), and then Baby Boomers (29%). Their reasons varied, but the folks surveyed said that having digital disconnection helped them feel more productive (42%), aware of what’s going on in their daily lives (33%), and present for their loved ones (33%).

Are you a good tipper? What generation you're in might have something to do with it.

Tipping feels awkward largely because of the many unwritten and changing social rules we have to navigate. It is a bit embarrassing to admit, but I did not realize until about a decade ago that most people tip for haircuts. Even as an adult with a mortgage, I had no clue. I was raised in a small town with two barber shops where nobody tipped for that service. I would have gladly paid extra if I had known better, but nobody told me. As usual, my wife eventually had to set me straight. All of this confusion happens before you even figure out the correct amount to leave.

This brings up a question about whether there is a generational element at play here. When you get used to paying a certain price for gas or a burger, it is painful to watch those numbers go up. While there are many factors to consider, researchers may have found some answers.

Eating a meal heavy in carbohydrates can easily make a person feel a bit off. Usually, it’s just feeling sleepy or full, maybe even some indigestion after eating multiple slices of pizza or a large sub sandwich. However, for some people, eating carbs can not only make them feel drunk, but actually make them drunk. Fortunately, scientists may have found a solution for them.

While rare, there are many people who are affected by “auto-brewery syndrome,” otherwise known as “gut fermentation syndrome.” Auto-brewery syndrome is when the gut bacteria within a person’s stomach ferments carbohydrates into ethanol during digestion, causing intoxication without any alcohol consumption. In other words, a person can become drunk after eating carbs like a plate of spaghetti or a breakfast bagel.
