Are you currently hunched over your iPad at work, shifting your eyes through the 18 tabs open on your Google Chrome browser? Perhaps contemplating which social media network you could update, or pondering what content will get you the most likes or comments? Being connected at all times might sound good in theory, but studies show it can seriously affect your health. Here are six ways the Internet is impacting your health, and how it’s inspired us to start a project to help people get offline.

1. Stress. Researchers say we need down time after work to recharge, but it’s so easy to stay connected now that for many of us, it’s pretty common to keep answering emails long after official work hours are over. That means you’re a lot more likely to keep worrying about work when you’re at home, and in turn, more likely to snap at your roommate or significant other. Without the chance to stop thinking about work, you can end up in a continuous state of stress.

2. Depression. Young people who are considered ‘heavy users’ of technology have a significantly greater chance of developing mental health problems like depression. They’re also more likely to have trouble sleeping, and be more stressed out, even if they’re not using technology for work.

3. Vision Impairment. Having trouble seeing? It might be because you’re staring at a screen too much. Computer Vision Syndrome is becoming more and more common, and causes everything from headaches to blurry vision to neck and shoulder pain.

4. Fuzzy Thinking. Technology’s changing the way our brains work. Research is still in the early stages, but studies are starting to show some of the different effects of spending lots of time online: limited attention span, lower comprehension, lack of focus, reduced long-term memory, and higher risk of depression, to name a few.

5. Addiction. Take away your iPhone for a day, and you might start to feel withdrawal symptoms. Researchers found that university students started feeling cravings, anxiety, and depression when they had to unplug. Another study took brain scans of people diagnosed as internet addicts, and found that they looked similar to the brains of gamblers, alcoholics, and drug addicts.

6. Inactivity. No surprises here, but the more time you spend online, the less you’re likely to move around. And lack of exercise can lead to a variety of different health problems. Recent research shows that not exercising kills about the same number of people each year as smoking.

For all of these reasons—in addition to the fact that we just wanted to help people meet interesting neighbors—we set out to create a platform that helps connect people offline and disconnect from technology. At The Pool is a web-based platform with members in 98 countries, moving mobile at the end of summer.

The goal is to help bridge the gap of online to offline connections, building communities and forging meaningful connections. By meeting like-minded people nearby, there is a greater chance you will enjoy a new experience, create a long-lasting friendship, and better your mental and physical well-being.

Take the pledge to get offline for better health.

  • Man’s dog suddenly becomes protective of his wife, Internet clocks the reason right away

Reddit user Girlfriendhatesmefor’s three-year-old pitbull, Otis, had recently become overprotective of his wife. So he asked the online community if they knew what might be wrong with the dog.

“A week or two ago, my wife got some sort of stomach bug,” the Reddit user wrote under the subreddit /r/dogs. “She was really nauseous and ill for about a week. Otis is very in tune with her emotions (we once got in a fight and she was upset, I swear he was staring daggers at me lol) and during this time didn’t even want to leave her to go on walks. We thought it was adorable!”

His wife soon felt better, butthe dog’s behavior didn’t change.

Girlfriendhatesmefor began to fear that Otis’ behavior may be an early sign of an aggression issue or an indication that the dog was hurt or sick.

So he threw a question out to fellow Reddit users: “Has anyone else’s dog suddenly developed attachment/aggression issues? Any and all advice appreciated, even if it’s that we’re being paranoid!”

The most popular response to his thread was by ZZBC.

Any chance your wife is pregnant?

The potential news hit Girlfriendhatesmefor like a ton of bricks. A few days later, Girlfriendhatesmefor posted an update and ZZBC was right!

“The wifey is pregnant!” the father-to-be wrote. “Otis is still being overprotective but it all makes sense now! Thanks for all the advice and kind words! Sorry for the delayed reply, I didn’t check back until just now!”

    Redditors responded with similar experiences.

Anecdotal I know but I swear my dog knew I was pregnant before I was. He was super clingy (more than normal) and was always resting his head on my belly.

So why do dogs get overprotective when someone is pregnant?

Jeff Werber, PhD, president and chief veterinarian of the Century Veterinary Group in Los Angeles, told Health.com that “dogs can also smell the hormonal changes going on in a woman’s body at that time.” He added the dog may “not understand that this new scent of your skin and breath is caused by a developing baby, but they will know that something is different with you—which might cause them to be more curious or attentive.”

The big lesson here is to listen to your pets and to ask questions when their behavior abruptly changes. They may be trying to tell you something, and the news may be life-changing.

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories

Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.

While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.

When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.

Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
