While it's no secret that the media often portrays “beautiful" women in a certain ideal fashion, what's less obvious is the changing “popular" standards of what that actually looks like.

The website Greatist recently did a rundown of these portrayals over the past 100 years, broken down by decade. The result is a fascinating look at how quickly definitions of beauty can change, often in direct response to the “beauty" that came before.

Psychologists reveal confidence-boosting reality check that can stop everyone from worrying

One of the hardest things as a pet owner is leaving our pets at home when we go to work or a dog-free function. It can feel stressful both to the owner and the pet since you’re going to be away for a significant amount of time...but, what if they could just call you up if they felt lonely?

Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, who heads the Animal-Computer Interaction Group at Glasgow University in Scotland, has spearheaded the creation of a DogPhone that enables dogs to contact their owners whenever they’re left alone. Her team has already developed an electronic ball from Hirskyj-Douglas’ pet Labrador, Zack, that sets up a video call on a laptop, allowing the dog to call her whenever he wants. The system is set up so Hirskyj-Douglas can call him as well, with either party free to pick up or ignore calls.

When my wife and I christened our dog, an adorable and fold-filled pit bull named Stephen, we didn’t think that was a controversial pick. We’re both huge fans of Steve Hackett and Steve Howe, two renowned prog-rock guitarists, and this was our way of tipping the cap—just as we’d done with other pets past and present. (To recap: Tony, for Tony Levin and Tony Banks; Peter, for Peter Gabriel; Gabriel, for, well, you guessed it; and Tegan, for Tegan Quin.) But when we introduce him to strangers on the street, people always say things like, "Really?" or "I love it when people give their dogs human names," as if it's unusual. I must have been living under a rock–apparently, giving your pet a "human name" is awfully divisive. "How did we get from naming our Labradors and Pomeranians things like Fluffy and Toto to christening them with names like Jake?" wrote Cleo Levin for Slate in 2024.

Well, if we trust the data from U.S. News & World Report, many people are indeed taking our approach—but not everyone. Their survey, initially posted in 2024 but updated with new research in September 2025, sheds light (and perhaps some fur) on where we stand with kitties. The publisher analyzed "1,261,285 data points" from the third-party pet insurance company Fletch, determining the top 20 cat names in America.

NASA can't find 'another explanation' for unusual Mars rock formations than ancient life

Ever since humankind gazed into the stars, we’ve asked whether we were alone or if there was other life out there. Whether it was science fiction or science fact, we’ve imagined and researched to see if there was any chance or sign of life having happened outside of Earth. Now, after years of studying the Red Planet of Mars, we may have found the answer.

Upon looking at a section of Mars dubbed “Cheyava Falls,” researchers saw what looked like “leopard spots” among the usual rocks and decided to take a closer look to identify them. After closer observation and analyzing them with specialized tools, they discovered that those leopard spots were deposits of vivianite and griegite. These iron minerals are associated with microbes interacting with organic matter on Earth. After closer analysis, they found organics and carbon, two necessary items for life to exist or have existed. Given that vivianite and greigite are waste products of microbes on Earth, and those iron minerals were in proximity to organics, it’s been determined that there was once some form of life on the Red Planet.

Not every thinning-haired man can be like Larry David, perhaps the most bald-conscious human on the planet. "I'm very proud of myself, and I'm not proud of myself for a lot of things," he told Jimmy Kimmel with a laugh in 2017. "But I'm very proud of myself for the way I accepted my baldness. It’s the only demonstration of character I've ever displayed in my life."

For many of us, losing our hair is a difficult life change, given that so much of our identity can be wrapped up in physical appearance. "Hair is deeply ingrained into one's self-image, inextricably linked to perceptions of beauty, health, youth, and gender," wrote Yoo Jung Kim, M.D., and Yoo Eun Kim for Psychology Today. "Moreover, hairstyling is also an essential part of many cultural and religious practices. Losing hair can worsen a patient's self-esteem, body image, and sense of distance from their social community."
