An estimated 757 million people are unable to read this sentence because they remain illiterate, and one in 10 adults in the US cannot read. To bridge this opportunity gap, Pearson and the Unreasonable Group have partnered together to launch “Project Literacy Lab,” the world’s first accelerator for entrepreneurs dedicated to closing the global literacy gap by 2030.

Project Literacy Lab brings together 16 high-growth ventures headquartered across five continents to collectively scale their technologies and products to combat illiteracy worldwide. Examples of ventures include Guru-G, the fastest growing app in India helping teachers teach; Edovo, tablet technology for incarcerated adults in the US; and Livox, an AI learning platform that customizes teaching for students with disabilities.

Every so often, a community gathers itself and puts aside petty annoyances and arguments to celebrate the things that really matter. That’s what happened in Kansas City when the community found out that three-year-old Tucker Langford was sent home on hospice care.

Tiny Tucker was diagnosed with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB), a rare skin condition that makes even the most gentle touch painful. In fact, when he was born, he was missing skin on his feet, hands, lips, and chest. Not only is Tucker fighting DEB, but he was also diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a terminal heart condition. After weeks of treatment, Tucker was sent home to enjoy the time he has left with his parents and family.

Sometimes, our opportunity to help is right in front of our eyes; we just need to have the heart to see it. A woman named Ginger Sprouse recalled seeing a homeless man, Victor Hubbard, quite often, as reported by CBS News. For three years, she would find the man in the same spot on the streets on her way to work. At first, she wondered why he couldn’t get a job or try to change his life. The incident, originally reported by CNN, involved Jarrid Tansey, a delivery driver for Palace Pizza, and the staff at F&R Auto Sales, a car dealership in Westport, Massachusetts. Tansey delivered a $42 order and was paid with $50. Assuming the extra money was a tip, he left. However, he soon received a call from the dealership demanding he drive back to return the $7 and change.

Culture expert compares Victorian and modern design to explain how the world got 'so ugly'

I recently visited Boston for the first time, and I was overwhelmed by how much American history was preserved downtown—and, additionally, by how the regal beauty of those historical buildings and sites contrasted with the sleekness of the newer constructions. My wife and I spent an hour or so strolling through the Granary Burying Ground, marveling at the ornately gothic designs of the headstones. Something about that idea felt profound—even these markers of death deserved to be infused with elegance.

So, why do our modern designs—even for our ordinary things like lamp posts—feel so bleh when they used to look so special centuries ago? Sheehan Quirke, a British writer and YouTuber under the moniker "The Cultural Tutor," set out to answer that very question in a deep-dive video titled "How Did the World Get So Ugly?" It’s a fascinating glimpse into aesthetic evolution and a nice reminder to seek out beauty in unexpected places.

A wife’s frustration turned to tears when she saw why her husband stayed late

Sometimes, people do not realize what their loved ones are sacrificing without a complaint. A farmer's wife realized that about her husband when she saw him having dinner while entertaining their daughter after a long day of work. The wife, Katie Spence Pugh, shared that realization about her cotton farmer husband, Eugene, in a now-deleted post on Facebook, per the Daily Mail. She also revealed the profound moment she realized that her husband was actually making more sacrifices than her, even though she was tired and frustrated because of his late working hours.

Before the shift in perspective

"I snapped this picture the other night at the end of a long day. I was tired. I was irritated," Pugh wrote about a picture of her husband having dinner, as their little daughter, Charlotte, sat on the table and started talking to him, while also eating his food. "I had sent my husband a text telling him that I knew it wouldn’t make a difference, but I wanted him to know that I was feeling fed up with how much he works and with all that I have to do every day by myself," she recounted, per Love What Matters. Her full-time job, cooking food, bathing the kids, weekend trips without her husband and maintaining a house at the same time was taking a toll on her and she was "resenting" her husband for having to do it all alone because of his work hours.
