Tracking the Language of the Environment

A cool new Google tools shows us how the language of environmental issues evolved over time.

Last week, Google labs released a new language tool, the Google Books Ngrams Viewer, that lets you plug in any word or short phrase and see how often they occurred in published books over a designated period of time.

While the technological tool itself is certainly worthy of its own post (looking at you, Peters!), it sure is fun (or, at least, interesting) to see how various words and phrases relevant to a particular field have played out over time.

Nicola already went ahead and tracked America's diet using Ngram. Following her lead, I couldn't help but wonder how various environmental terms have played out in literature over the past 100 or so years.

At what age are people usually happiest? Well, it depends on where you live.

Understandably, people want to know at what age you tend to be the happiest so they can plan for it and enjoy as it happens. However, there is disparity among the numerous articles and research that pinpoints a specific age or age range. Some believe that your golden years at age 60 and above are your happiest, others cite mid-30s, or even as late as a person’s 70s. You may know people who claim their 20s were the happiest days of their lives. However, the age that you’ll be the happiest is less of a when question and more of a where.

Many studies have determined that the happiest age depends on where the person lives and has grown up rather than a particular age. Traditionally in the United States, prime happiness peaked at ages 30 and 70 respectively, but that is no longer the case.

Psychologists believe this is the favorite color of the most intelligent people

“What’s your favorite color?” is a common icebreaker question for interviews, dates, and just plain getting to know people. For many, the answer is a gateway into a person’s personality or their preferences, a way to get a person to talk about themselves and reveal why it's their favorite. Some psychologists, however, believe the answer to this question reveals more about their intelligence than the average person would believe.

According to a report or two, a person’s color preference could be an indicator of their level of intellect. Per these reports, if a person’s favorite color is red, they claim their personality is louder, brasher, and more impulsive than a person whose favorite color is something else, marking that color as the favorite of the less intelligent. White is perceived as a color associated with professionalism and order. These articles and an old study point out that blue is the most common favorite color among intelligent people. Personality-wise, blue is associated with calmness, coolness, dependability, and dispassionate reason.

Trouble reading your texts? FDA approves eye drop that helps regain near vision.

Most of us start to experience small changes in our vision as we age. Reading small text, plucking your eyebrows, putting on makeup, and even using the computer or smartphone can all be a lot harder when you have a hard time seeing up close. For those of you who wear glasses to see up close, the future is looking a bit brighter. After recent approval by the Food and Drug Administration, you may get to swap out your readers for some eye drops.

Eye drops regain near vision without compromising distance vision

A new eye drop can help people regain near vision. The original drop was developed in 1975 for glaucoma, but the drops—called Vizz—have been repurposed for age-related farsightedness. Fox 26 Houston reported that the drops cost as little as $2 per day and can last for up to 10 hours. It's an affordable choice when compared to other options like glasses.

The Traveling Wilburys 're-formed,' people say these five modern-day rock stars make the cut

It’s honestly hard to believe that The Traveling Wilburys ever existed. Running from 1988 to 1991 and leaving behind a pair of platinum albums, they were the textbook definition of a supergroup—merging the talents of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Electric Light Orchestra mastermind Jeff Lynne, and (prior to his death in late 1988) Roy Orbison.

It’s hard to argue that we’ve seen a real successor, at least in terms of star power. Still, it’s fun to debate what one might look like in 2025. What are the parameters for this imaginary band? What makes a musician worthy? Is it fame and chart success? Critical acclaim and reputation? Do the artists in question have to channel the Wilburys’ roots-rock spirit? Does age matter? There are tons of questions.

John Lennon wrote a wonderful letter to an aspiring folk artist. It went undelivered for decades.

John Lennon had a distinctively droll sense of humor, a wealth of insights from a career defined by unfathomable success and public scrutiny, and, yes, a charmingly rough handwriting style. If a letter from the musician showed up in your mailbox, you could probably figure out the source without even glancing at the return address. And for most aspiring folk artists, receiving such a note would have been life-changing—that is, if it was even delivered.

That scenario is now forever linked to Steve Tilston, a British singer-songwriter who shared his experience in 2010. It all dates back to an interview with underground music magazine ZigZag from 1971, conducted shortly after the release of his debut LP, An Acoustic Confusion. As Tilston recalled to the BBC in 2010, the ZigZag interviewer asked the 21-year-old artist "whether, if I received untold wealth and fortune, it would have a detrimental effect on my songwriting." He added, "I thought it was bound to, but obviously John Lennon disagreed, and he wrote to me to point out the error of my ways."

Atheist calls church the 'ultimate money saving hack' and learned a lesson about community

Given the current economy, many of us are looking for ways to save a buck or two wherever we can. Everyone is searching for coupons, deals, and life hacks in order to save more money and share whatever works for them with others. Some methods are…well, let’s say kind of “out there” on paper, such as when an atheist touted that church was the “ultimate money saving hack.”

He explained that while he didn’t have faith, he would still attend church with his wife. Through their church connections, he got a roofer and teens to fix a hole in his roof at only the cost of materials, had an issue at the DMV resolved quickly through a church contact, and got free meals from church members for a month when his wife was ill. “It's honestly crazy how much cheap labor, food, help, etc. that you can get from the church,” he wrote.
