Every weekday from 7am to 6pm during the school year and throughout the summer, children tumble through the Boys and Girls Clubs of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, served by only seventeen staff members and a bevy of eager volunteers. From homework assistance and physical fitness activities to healthy habits education (including nutrition, personal wellness, and drug resistance training), the programs focus on keeping kids (many from at-risk backgrounds) active and learning—and happy.

The Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists (SDMB) was established in 1998 by a handful of intrepid mountain bikers advocating for good trails and land conservation in southern Arizona. It has only three full-time staff and eleven board members, but has been able to preserve open land and most of the mountain bike trails in the Tucson area. With supporters including world-class pro cyclist Todd Wells, they have become the go-to local experts in trail advocacy, helping build a bike park for a neighborhood school, training others on how to build trails, and chipping in funds for trail signs when the Forest Service is short on cash.

For its first ten years, CFC was a scrappy nonprofit, where Craig Pollard, his wife Stacy, and six dedicated friends pulled together a golf tournament and gave every penny to scholarships. Then, one of Pollard’s USC frat buddies and CFC supporter from the start became famous: Will Ferrell. The organization took off with his help. It now employees two staff members and awards around 90 scholarships annually of $1,000 to $4,000 to kids heading to schools such as Stanford, Harvard, UC Berkeley, and Texas A&M.
