Costco's Plan for Surviving Disaster: One Year's Food for $800

Costco's "Thrive One Year Food Supply" is just what it sounds like: a collection of enough canned food to feed one person for 12 months.

Costco's "Thrive One Year Food Supply" is just what it sounds like: a collection of canned fruits, veggies, grains, dairy, and proteins designed to feed one person for 12 months—all for $799.99 (after a $200 rebate). That breaks down to daily food cost of $2.19, which, if you've ever been to a restaurant, sounds like a great deal.

Thrive is made by the awesomely named Shelf Reliance company, which describes itself as "your premier source for food storage and emergency preparedness planning." From a purely economic perspective, I love this concept—especially considering Thrive's impressive 25-year shelf life. And I'll admit that the packaging has a surprisingly pleasant aesthetic. But the product's wink at an imminent apocalypse sends shivers down my spine.

Does anyone know whether it's healthy to eat dehydrated, freeze-dried food for an entire year? I suppose if you found yourself in the position of needing to do so, nutrition wouldn't be your chief worry.
