Even someone earning $10,830 per year—this is the number at which we drew the federal poverty line in 2009—is richer than 86.87 percent of the world. Granted, it could be profoundly difficult to get by on ten grand a year in the United States, but the idea that so many people around the world make significantly less money than that is worth some pondering.
