Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar issued the first ever "The U.S. State of the Birds" report today.According to the report, 251 out of 800 bird species in the United States are either federally listed as "endangered" or "threatened" or are a "conservation concern" because of declining populations, and bird populations in Hawaii are "in crisis." So one third of all bird species in America are in trouble.I don't rely on these birds in my daily life. But given all the interdependencies in our environment, this can't be a good sign. And biodiversity seems like a good in and of itself. Also, some of these birds are beautiful. And others look hilarious (see photo). There's tons of info, and a link to the full report, at the State of the Birds website. If you want to help the conservation effort by identifying species that live in your neighborhood and reporting them online, join eBird.
