Olympics 2016 Logos

  • Posted by: Andrew Price

The Beijing Olympics are still fresh in our memory. There was that flashy opening ceremony. Michael Phelps. That one gymnast girl.

Ok, maybe the memory isn’t that fresh. Either way, the candidate cities for the 2016 games are already gearing up with their logos. Have a look below.

We’re pulling for Rio. Their logo is nice, and the fact that the Olympics have never been hosted in Brazil, or anywhere in South America for that matter, seems a little inequitable.

What do you think?

They’re all pretty unimaginative. At least the London 2012 logo was a brave attempt to break with tradition and do something new. These logos simply mimic logos from previous years to diminishing effect. Obscure Graphic Symbol thing: Check. Dubious typography stating city name and year: Check. Some lame link to Olympic Rings: Sort of. Bland internationalism the bypasses the countries current graphic design superheroes: Check and ‘Cheque please’.

I disagree. What you described was every Olympic logo thrown into your own idea of what it typically resembles. Take another look at rio. (intentional mis-capitalization) The text alone breaks the mold. The logo is simple and elegant. (Only 3 colors are used) Also, each design’s “obscure graphic symbol thing” usually holds some significance relative to that particular country and their culture. While perhaps they aren’t as “imaginative” as London ‘12, they surely deserve recognition. (they aren’t chosen to represent a country for being lame) Anyway, love rio and stoked for S. America’s first games.

boicozine hit the nail on the head. The logo is attractive – I don’t know what it means, but i assume it has significance to someone more familiar with the city. But that type treatment is just painful. WAY too much going on.But can’t we just do them in Vancouver? Can’t go wrong with adorable flash characters

Is it me or are the ‘i’ in Rio and the ‘1′ in 2016 making a sort of Latin double exclamation mark?

I think that Rio is a beautiful location for the Olympics, however that logo does not capture how alive Rio is.  The Heart is very flat and cold to me.  Rio is passionate living breathing city and should have an electric logo. South America deserves it’s moment is the Olympic spot light.  I think we should skip the United States for a couple rounds and give other countries the time to shine.

Mmmm…Brazilians are Hot. I don’t care about the logo, but I definitely cast my vote for holding in Rio.

I wish Chicago could have kept their torch logo. It was absolutely elegant with the flame as the Chicago skyline with a cool blue reflection as the torch. Sadly, the IOC would have none of that…

I definitely enjoy Madrid’s logo as well. I think it is one that eight years from now will still be a good decision.

Being a Chicago native, I am just a hint biased! Downtoblue: fear not! If Chicago get’s the bid, they could then revive the torch as only official cities (not bid cities) can include the torch in their logo. We just got a little ahead of ourselves! Vote early and often!

I really like the Rio one…the rest just looks like I’ve seen them before. about 538 times.

I was in Tokyo for a couple weeks this last summer, and they have advertising everywhere for 2012.  I had so much fun their that I would like to see them get the nod.  Chicago would allow me to actually go see the Olympics so I must root for them too.
