Recess Before Lunch

And now for something decidedly less high-tech.A story that appeared earlier this week in The New York Times, featured a new approach to the ordering of a school day-namely that when kids play before eating lunch, versus the time-honored tradition of after, less food is wasted, in addition to an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.North Ranch Elementary, a school that piloted the program in Arizona, reported that nurse visits had dropped by nearly half-and that students reported fewer bouts of nausea on the swing set.But children's health experts note that such a switch might not work as well in many urban school districts, where many low-income kids already start out the day hungry. But surely it's not just poor kids who aren't eating breakfast. On the topic of children and their eating habits, Andre Bauer, South Carolina's Lieutenant Governor, recently compared kids that receive free lunches to stray animals.
\nBauer: "My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed."
Thankfully, Jon Stewart fired right back.\n\n\n\n\nPhoto via Getty Images.
