W00t Is The Word Of The Year. Yay?

  • Posted by: Andrew Price
  • on December 12, 2007 at 7:00 pm

The online community has picked “w00t” as Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year 2007. It is an interjection “expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word ‘yay.’”

Seriously? Last year’s word, truthiness, captured the profound epistemological uncertainty of our time. A synonym for “yay” that you use “for no reason at all” just doesn’t have the same cultural heft.

i wish i could have stated my feelings as succinctly as mr. price. excellent point, and kudos on the times shout-out.

I see a great need for interjections that express joy and triumph. I see “W00t” as meaning a bit more than “yay” though!

It’s a lot better than all the swaring that goes in our languages (Especially in English)

Word of the year 2007? W00t is so five years ago. I guess, like so many things that are edgy, when they hit mainstream, they are mostly already dead to the cool kids.

pshhh wOOt is what those runescape geeks at school say when they see a guy kissa girl or guy kiss guy or (triple wOOt to them) girl kissing girl, OR seeing tiny Freshman girls almost get canned, but then don’t because they put their feet against the wall and can’t be put over the trashcan…haha, that was my first day of school! and no one has tried since! wOOt!

Before coining brand new words, let’s all see how much better off we could be getting a real grip on the spelling of  those already in the book!
