Walkman, RIP: Sony Officially Stops Production of the Awesome Portable Tape Player

Sony has announced that it has officially stopped production of Walkmans because, obviously, no one buys them anymore, except in China.

Sony has announced that it has officially stopped production of Walkmans because, obviously, no one buys them anymore. Thirty-one years after it hit the market, Sony had sold more than 200 million of the things—a number that has already been eclipsed by the iPod in just nine years. (As of April 2010, 260 million iPods had been sold.)

Anyway, it's still a little sad, especially for anyone who grew up in the 1980s and had one of those amazing lacquered-yellow Sony Sport devices.

The good news is, if you are going to China, you can still buy one there, because Sony has licensed its production to some companies over there.
