Two veteran war journalists, Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington, were killed by an explosion in the town of Misurata, Libya yesterday. Hondros has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his work covering civil unrest in Liberia. Hetherington had recently co-directed the documentary Restrepo with journalist Sebastian Junger, about their time spent embedded with a platoon in the war with Afghanistan. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 2010.

In the wake of Hetherington's death, his short film Diary which was produced last year feels like a fitting retrospective of his career as a war photographer. Ten years of footage collected from his work around the world is edited into a series of beautiful, highly-emotional scenes where surreal, exotic landscapes melt into the jarring urban grit of combat.

It's easy to forget that journalists are among those risking their lives in service of their countries The Committee to Protect Journalists publishes a comprehensive database of journalists who have been killed in action.
