A week after Donald Trump won enough electoral votes to clinch the presidency, CEO Bill Penzey of Penzeys Spices released a company newsletter that took many by surprise. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Penzey admonished the president-elect for his racist vitriol and rejected the Republican Party’s “open embrace of racism,” saying it has unleashed a “wave of ugliness unseen in this country for decades.” He ended his letter with a positive note and a call to action, writing, “Let’s commit to giving the people a better choice. Our kindness really is our strength.”

In a follow-up Facebook post meant to address those offended by his letter, Penzey clarified that he was not condemning all Republicans, but would not let up on his criticism of Trump’s divisive tactics and die-hard supporters. In the two weeks since Penzey made that clarification and stood by his admonishment of Trump’s bigotry, his spice business has soared. According to Facebook, the company saw just 3 percent of customers leave as a result of the post, while overall online sales have grown by nearly 60 percent. If this boost in business proves anything about the prevailing views of this country, it’s that kindness wins over rabid justification of hate.

Despite losing a few customers in the process, Penzey clearly has no regrets about defending equal rights and general decency. As he explained in an update posted to Facebook Thursday,

“Our customers come from all walks of life. The kindness of cooks knows no borders or divides. In the aftermath of the election, seeing the intentional damage inflicted on so many outside the white heterosexual male world, we raised our voice. We felt we had to. We did this because we are Penzeys. The spice business is so intertwined with history that it’s not really possible to have one without the other. It became clear to us that we are now in a moment history will long have its eyes upon. For the sake of our customers, and for the sake of future generations, we felt the time had come to stand on the right side of history.

In this moment there is finally the real chance to unite our nation in our shared rejection of sexism, homophobia, and racism. This is your chance to stand up for America’s values and make January a tent pole in your company’s history. Opportunities to do the right thing at the time when doing the right thing makes all the difference come once in a lifetime. Make your history proud.”

While every American can make a stand against bigotry—no matter their political leanings—it will become increasingly important for business owners to take a definitive stand as well. Without the basic tenets of free speech and inclusion that the American ideal is built on, small businesses would have few opportunities to exist. In the coming years, consumers and CEOs alike will repeatedly face decisions that either disenfranchise or uplift fellow Americans. It’s up to all of us to stay engaged and informed so that we can choose the latter.

Reddit user Girlfriendhatesmefor’s three-year-old pitbull, Otis, had recently become overprotective of his wife. So he asked the online community if they knew what might be wrong with the dog.

“A week or two ago, my wife got some sort of stomach bug,” the Reddit user wrote under the subreddit /r/dogs. “She was really nauseous and ill for about a week. Otis is very in tune with her emotions (we once got in a fight and she was upset, I swear he was staring daggers at me lol) and during this time didn’t even want to leave her to go on walks. We thought it was adorable!”

His wife soon felt better, butthe dog’s behavior didn’t change.

Girlfriendhatesmefor began to fear that Otis’ behavior may be an early sign of an aggression issue or an indication that the dog was hurt or sick.

So he threw a question out to fellow Reddit users: “Has anyone else’s dog suddenly developed attachment/aggression issues? Any and all advice appreciated, even if it’s that we’re being paranoid!”

The most popular response to his thread was by ZZBC.

Any chance your wife is pregnant?

The potential news hit Girlfriendhatesmefor like a ton of bricks. A few days later, Girlfriendhatesmefor posted an update and ZZBC was right!

“The wifey is pregnant!” the father-to-be wrote. “Otis is still being overprotective but it all makes sense now! Thanks for all the advice and kind words! Sorry for the delayed reply, I didn’t check back until just now!”

    Redditors responded with similar experiences.

Anecdotal I know but I swear my dog knew I was pregnant before I was. He was super clingy (more than normal) and was always resting his head on my belly.

So why do dogs get overprotective when someone is pregnant?

Jeff Werber, PhD, president and chief veterinarian of the Century Veterinary Group in Los Angeles, told Health.com that “dogs can also smell the hormonal changes going on in a woman’s body at that time.” He added the dog may “not understand that this new scent of your skin and breath is caused by a developing baby, but they will know that something is different with you—which might cause them to be more curious or attentive.”

The big lesson here is to listen to your pets and to ask questions when their behavior abruptly changes. They may be trying to tell you something, and the news may be life-changing.

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories

Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.

While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.

When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.

Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
