It’s perfectly normal to have some pre-flight jitters. Sure, you can toss back a few stiff pre-flight cocktails to soothe your nerves, or you can throw in your headphones and listen to One Ring Zero, music specifically tailored to those who count the minutes until their feet are back on solid ground.

Michael Hearst is one half of the band One Ring Zero, whose nine albums include As Smart as We Are (The Author Project), The Recipe Project (songs of recipes from well-known culinary experts, verbatim). His solo works include the albums Songs For Ice Cream Trucks, Songs For Unusual Creatures, and the upcoming Songs For Fearful Flyers.

“I hate to fly, and so do millions of other people,” Hearst explains. “At some point someone told me that the only album that they could listen to while on an airplane was Songs For Ice Cream Trucks (an album released in 2007 by Hearst). I thought, hmm maybe I should work on some compositions that are specifically meant to calm the aviophobic.”

Along with working on Songs for Fearful Flyers, Hearst has two documentaries in the works for 2013: a documentary about actor George Takei, directed by Jennifer Kroot, and Science Fiction Land, directed by Judd Ehrlich.

Hearst is also the author of a children’s book, Unusual Creatures, which takes a look at some of our planet’s oddly fascinating animals, and is working on another for this year. Tentatively titled Extraordinary People, the book will highlight some of the most awesome people in the world: Bruce Lee, Buckminster Fuller, Helen Keller, Spud Webb, Jeanne de Clisson, Evil Knievel, Jane Goodall, and more.

As if he’s not doing enough this year, Hearst says he also hopes to work on more Unusual Creatures educational videos in 2013. Look out for Songs for Fearful Flyers, which Hearst would like to release by the end of the year, and his two documentaries, which have tentative release dates for this summer.

Join Hearst in bringing the Unusual Creatures projects to more schools, science centers, and cultural institutions.
