The Shirt Off His Back: An Act of Kindness on the Subway

“The guy did a good deed, so I wanted to record it.”

Add this one to the genre of heartwarming YouTube clips: A young man gives his shirt and then his hat to a man in distress. The act of kindness was recorded on video by Lazaro Nolasco, riding the Brooklyn-bound A train last Friday night. Temperatures in the city had gone down to a chilly low 40s.

Nolasco caught the powerful moment during the long stretch between 125th and 59th streets. He said that after shooting the video, he watched as the young man asked the cold stranger if he would like to go to the hospital. The man answered yes. Nolasco got off soon after and didn’t know what happened to the pair.

“The guy did a good deed, so I wanted to record it,” Nolasco told the Daily News. “I would tell him, ‘God bless him.’ That was thoughtful.”
