Astrophysicist Jason Steffen has made a discovery, but it has less to do with galaxy magnifying glasses than it does boarding airplanes.

The postdoc fellow has devised an approach to getting passengers in their seats (10 at a time, in alternating rows) that he says is at least four times faster than the strategy currently employed by most airlines. Less time waiting in the aisle for luggage stowage means more efficient boarding, which in turn means quicker flights, and (for the airlines) more trips in a given day. Less hassle, better business, everybody wins-even applied physics.
