Illustrator Yao Xiao thinks people are overly apologetic when they should be thankful instead. “A few friends of mine would always say 'thank you for hanging out with me' and I couldn't figure out why it was so nice to hear it," she told A Plus. “When I thanked people, it brought to light the fact that we just did something together—and that realization made us both happier."

An apology is a show of humility by one, but a well-placed “thank you" uplifts everyone. “To me it is not about correcting behavior," Xiao says. “It is about taking an extra step when you are capable. I know that when I say 'sorry I'm taking up so much of your time,' I just want to hear someone say 'it's okay, and I like spending time with you.' It comes from the same place, and people understand it."

Character is often revealed in small, unseen moments. For Shawn Davis, that moment arrived at a gas station in Texas when he spotted a piece of paper lying on the ground. According to a report from KENS 5, the paper was worn, bearing tire marks that suggested it had been there for some time.

Davis decided to do a simple good deed and clear away the litter. “I thought, ‘Hey, I'll just throw that away real quick,’” he recalled in a statement to LOCAL 12. But when he picked it up, he noticed it felt heavy. His curiosity led him to open it, revealing an envelope filled with a stack of $20 bills and a personal money order.

NASA scientists discover a strange, lemon-shaped planet 'nobody has seen before'

Anyone willing to invest some time in the bizarre field of space will find a lot is going on out there besides mathematical numbers. Using the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers discovered an exotic planet with an atmosphere of mostly helium and carbon. This Jupiter-sized planet, containing a high ratio of carbon molecules, defies current planetary formation theories, and that's not even the weird part.

Blasted by gamma rays that heat the atmosphere to 3000 degrees Fahrenheit, this peculiar planet orbits a dead star every 7.8 hours. Astronomers believe this could be the strangest planet ever found. At only a million miles from a sun with a similar mass to ours, but at only the size of a city, the intense gravity smashes the planet PSR J2322-2650b into the shape of a lemon.

One woman's 'meme' application helped her land a gig after two years of job hunting

You might think you’re better at making goofy memes than punching up your work résumé, but after hearing the story of Allie Latic, you might notice some interesting overlap between those two seemingly unrelated skills. In July 2025, after more than two years of aggressive job hunting and frustrating rejections, the 29-year-old landed a gig with help from an outside-the-box "application meme" that made everything fall into place.

Latic shared her story in an "as-told-to" feature with Business Insider, detailing how her silly but creative Hail-Mary move came to life. She pointed back to May 2023 when she graduated with a master’s degree in library and information science. That was the beginning of a winding journey: applying to over 500 jobs, lots of networking, optimizing her résumé and cover letters. Nothing seemed to work. One day, feeling especially frustrated, she took a break by making a graphic on Canva and sending it to her friends.

German start-up creates unlikely search-and-rescue workers: cockroaches with tiny backpacks

Societies across the world are looking for ways to lower the loss of human life during military operations and rescue missions. There are heroes out there whose duty it is to risk their personal health and safety to rescue people trapped under rubble in toxic areas. Though they do an amazing job, they routinely put themselves in harm's way for the sake of others. Ideally, we'd have heroes who can rescue others and make it out unscathed themselves. Turns out, those heroes could be cockroaches with little backpacks.

SWARM Biotactics, a start-up in Germany, is working on using Madagascar hissing cockroaches with tiny backpacks fitted with cameras and microphones to act as spies to be used in search-and-rescue missions. This science-fiction-sounding scheme seems like something from a '90s animated action show, but it is indeed very real.
