Marketplace’s Kai Ryssdal has pored over all the submissions to our Make Sense of the Financial Mess contest, and has rendered a verdict.
Jonathan Jarvis’s two-part infographic (a static adaptation of his video about the credit crisis) is a “clear, concise explanation of what happens inside the magic box that is a collateralized debt obligation and the fallout we all feel when the contents go bad.”
Congratulations, Jonathan. You go home with the $500 prize.
Second prize goes to Karen Ong, who, says Ryssdal, “lays out the global implications of the bust in the American real estate market.” Karen, you get no money, but the honor of a second place victory.
You can see the two winning submissions below. Thanks to everyone who participated, all the submissions were beyond impressive. We were really blown away. You can view all the entries here. Please be on the lookout for our next infographic design contest, coming soon.

CONGRATZ! I actually showed your video in one of my PolSci classes and everyone including the professor loved it. Great job getting this mess into an explainable graphic for those of us without great knowledge of CDOs and leveraging. Thank you
Great Stuff! Wish I could see more of the submissions!
Found the rest of the submissions.
Thanks GOOD and thanks Kai Ryssdal. I am enjoying the honor of my second place victory. Great work Jonathan. The print piece was a great adaptation of your stellar video. I really learned a lot by taking on this project and look forward to the next infographic design contest.
Kudos, Karen – you are awesome!!!! ….Ann Rowe-McMullen, Salter>Mitchell, Tallahassee, Fla.
