If I Were President

  • Posted by: GOOD

The campaign promises of John McCain and Barack Obama have been widely publicized. But what would Mos Def do as commander in chief? What about Murs or Marjora Carter? Have a look at the trailer for our new video series, “If I Were President.”

[good width="560" height="316" image=""]http://pre.cloudfront.goodinc.com/videos/IIWP-Preview.mp4[/good]

Look for the first episode on October 20. Produced with our friends at 24/7 Townhall.

If I were president, I would launch the Marshall Plan for Education:

    (1) name Michelle Rhee the secretary of education
    (2) eliminate No Child Left Behind and empower states to set targets and to provide incentives that ensure every child who graduate can read/write at appropriate level
    (3) abolish tenure, institute merit-based salaries for teachers across the US and mandate team development among teachers
    (4) engage corporations and philanthropists to create funding strategies to bring arts education back into every public school
    (5) institute penmanship competitions so students do not lose ability to write long-hand and take notes with pen and paper
    (6) allow students to sign up for AmeriCorps Fellowships, committing to several years of public service after graduation to subsidize university fees so students can graduate debt-free and communities can benefit from their talents
    (7) offer free college education to returning GIs who served in Iraq or Afghanistan
    (8) create public campaign for coalition of high-tech giants, including Microsoft, Cisco, Google, Oracle and others, to advance undergrad/graduate tutition fees for gifted students who excel in math and sciences and agree to work at these firms upon graduation
    (9) insist that every school in America participate in US FIRST competition
    (10) allocate funds to build a single librariy in every village in Africa (credti to John Wood from Room to Read for this idea) to rebuild our image in Africa and across the world
these are my ideas – what are YOUR iIDEAS!!  :-)
    best,
    Jonathan

I would give Kucinich his Dept. of Peace + 5% of our defense budget.

I would mandate yoga for all prisoners and abolish the death penalty.

I would elect Rogers Numbers as my VP.

if i were president i would:-end the war in iraq and spend every cent of the money allotted for it to overhaul and modernize our public education system, provide goverment sponsored health care to every man, woman and child and pay for the college education of every child in this country.  if they can come up with the money to kill people, they better be able to come up with the same amount of money to help them.
-shift the debate over morality from the bedroom to the boardroom.  if
people got their panties in a bunch over the halliburtons and enrons of
the world half as much as they got their panties in a bunch
over…well, panties in a bunch (because they belong to elliot
spitzer’s lady of the night)…we’d be better off.-institute a “3 strikes” rule against politicians.  3 major fuck-ups= impeached.  3 scandals in which you’re found guilty= fries with that? -create a ‘department of information’ and nationalize all news outlets in the country.  no more fox, no more cnn- just the in-depth, honest reporting.  the department would be publically funded and safegaurded so that no administration or politician could vote to stop funding it or to influence it’s coverage because they didn’t agree with their reporting.  taking the profit out of news would put integrity and honesty back into it.-ban: death penalty, torture, illegal wire tapping-de-criminalize: marijuana, gay marriage & prostitution-reform our criminal justice system- drug offenses would be handled out of prison through rehab, mental health facilities, etc and social programs designed to keep people working & off the streets.  with all that extra room in the prisons, maybe we’ll have the space and money to keep murderers and kiddie rapists locked up-make it a national priority to close the wealth gap in the country.  “Operation Robin Hood’s” first ordinance would be to pay off my college loans…you know…to set an example.
