Intermission: Forties Era British Film Shows Where Bicycles Are Born

Enjoy the high toned narration pronouncing the bicycle a "boon to man and a faithful friend."

[vimeo][/vimeo]

A short film made in 1945 by the British Council shows in painstaking detail how a bicycle is made. "Here is a factory in industrial Britain, a planned response to the world's demand for bicycles," the film begins, panning over a vast grey skyline. The bicycle, we learn, is, much like the internet, a series of tubes. Skip towards the end at 16:45 for some priceless biking propaganda: "a great boon to man, ideal for shopping, easy to park... a faithful friend, ever ready to take tired workers back home." Preaching to the choir, old chap.
