The Top Tweets of 2010: People Have Balanced Concerns

Twitter analyzed 25 billion Tweets from 2010 to come up with this list of the year's "top trends." The oil spill tops the list. And Paul sneaks in.

The people at Twitter have analyzed the 25 billion Tweets from 2010 to come up with this list of the "top trends" of the year.

1. Gulf Oil Spill

2. FIFA World Cup

3. Inception

4. Haiti Earthquake

5. Vuvuzela

6. Apple iPad

7. Google Android

8. Justin Bieber

9. Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

10. Pulpo Paul

On the Twitter blog, we get this clue about the methodology: "Each Trend in the Top 10 list includes multiple related terms, to give the most accurate view of the topics that people cared about most in 2010." Their analysis is more sophisticated than just counting hashtags (more clues here).

Overall, I'm pretty encouraged. People cared about technology trends, the World Cup, and some pop culture events, but also the big humanitarian and environmental stories.

"Pulpo Paul," by the way, is the Spanish name for Paul the Octopus, the World Cup match-predicting cephalopod.
