As much as we love getting lit af, GOODFest is nothing without its causes. They’re fundamental to our mission of creating a music event that does more than simply give you an excuse to bust out those embarrassing and/or fire dance moves for a few hours.

The world is in a state of constant turmoil and there are an unprecedented number of worthy non-profits that need your attention, time, and dollars. So why did we choose to partner with the ones we did? Rather than prattling on about it second-hand, we thought it best to give the charities themselves a soapbox here to explain directly to you why they’re so vital.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has been working within the American court systems to combat hate groups, discriminatory laws, and other violations of basic human rights for decades, all without charging their clients fees or accepting government funding. You’d be hard pressed to think of a more noble pursuit.

We asked Southern Poverty Law Center representative Heidi Beirich why the world so desperately needs love and compassion-focused charities these days. Here’s what she had to say.

“Love and compassion-based charities are needed in 2017 more than ever to ensure our nation lives up to its highest ideals by standing up for those who have no other champions.

The presidential election exposed deep racial fissures that simply cannot be ignored. In the weeks after the election, the Southern Poverty Law Center documented almost 1,100 reports of harassment and intimidation across the country. And within our nation’s schools, teachers have reported an increase in the use of slurs and derogatory language, along with disturbing incidents involving swastikas, Nazi salutes and Confederate flags. Hate groups and other extremists have been emboldened as their message has gone mainstream.

Clearly, we’re facing a critical time in our nation. And it is why the Southern Poverty Law Center’s work of fighting hate, teaching tolerance and seeking justice is urgently needed in 2017.In the new year, we’ll be tracking nearly 1,900 extremist groups operating across the country. We’ll be stepping up our campaign to shut down the internet funding of hate groups and combat their efforts to indoctrinate young people online.

We’ll continue to expose politicians who get their policy ideas and talking points from hate groups and track the way extremist propaganda seeps into the media – helping Americans to connect the dots between far-right extremists and the politicians who pander to them. In the halls of government, we’ll continue to work with lawmakers fighting extremism. In the nation’s courts, we’ll continue to help thousands of people by winning justice for vulnerable children, people living in poverty, exploited immigrants, the LGBT community and other marginalized groups. And in our schools, we’ll help educators dedicated to creating inclusive, nurturing schools by providing them with free anti-bias resources designed to combat prejudice among our youth.

In 2017, it will be vitally important to stand with love- and compassion-based charities that recognize that by embracing our nation’s diversity, we’re embracing a brighter future for everyone.”

  • Man’s dog suddenly becomes protective of his wife, Internet clocks the reason right away

Reddit user Girlfriendhatesmefor’s three-year-old pitbull, Otis, had recently become overprotective of his wife. So he asked the online community if they knew what might be wrong with the dog.

“A week or two ago, my wife got some sort of stomach bug,” the Reddit user wrote under the subreddit /r/dogs. “She was really nauseous and ill for about a week. Otis is very in tune with her emotions (we once got in a fight and she was upset, I swear he was staring daggers at me lol) and during this time didn’t even want to leave her to go on walks. We thought it was adorable!”

His wife soon felt better, butthe dog’s behavior didn’t change.

Girlfriendhatesmefor began to fear that Otis’ behavior may be an early sign of an aggression issue or an indication that the dog was hurt or sick.

So he threw a question out to fellow Reddit users: “Has anyone else’s dog suddenly developed attachment/aggression issues? Any and all advice appreciated, even if it’s that we’re being paranoid!”

The most popular response to his thread was by ZZBC.

Any chance your wife is pregnant?

The potential news hit Girlfriendhatesmefor like a ton of bricks. A few days later, Girlfriendhatesmefor posted an update and ZZBC was right!

“The wifey is pregnant!” the father-to-be wrote. “Otis is still being overprotective but it all makes sense now! Thanks for all the advice and kind words! Sorry for the delayed reply, I didn’t check back until just now!”

    Redditors responded with similar experiences.

Anecdotal I know but I swear my dog knew I was pregnant before I was. He was super clingy (more than normal) and was always resting his head on my belly.

So why do dogs get overprotective when someone is pregnant?

Jeff Werber, PhD, president and chief veterinarian of the Century Veterinary Group in Los Angeles, told Health.com that “dogs can also smell the hormonal changes going on in a woman’s body at that time.” He added the dog may “not understand that this new scent of your skin and breath is caused by a developing baby, but they will know that something is different with you—which might cause them to be more curious or attentive.”

The big lesson here is to listen to your pets and to ask questions when their behavior abruptly changes. They may be trying to tell you something, and the news may be life-changing.

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories

Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.

While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.

When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.

Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
