GOOD Helps Build a School Garden

More than 100 volunteers joined GOOD at 28th Street Elementary School in downtown L.A. to help build two school gardens this past weekend.

Last Saturday we held a workday to build one of the winning school garden designs from our project Design a School Garden with LAUSD (and We'll Build It). With cooperation from LAUSD's Sustainable Schoolyards group, we were able to build two Four Square Gardens, designed by Jill Desimini, at the 28th Street Elementary School in downtown Los Angeles. More than 100 volunteers, parents, and students spent LAUSD's first annual Martin Luther King day of service hammering together raised beds, painting storage bins bright orange and yellow, refreshing and replanting planters, and picking up every piece of trash on the school's property. Now the school is bright and clean, and the garden is ready to be planted by the students.

Thanks to Starbucks for donating coffee, Homegirl Cafe for breakfast, Mayor Villaraigosa's office for morning snacks and lunch (including a delicious bison sandwich by Large Marge Sustainables), DCM for water, and Home Depot for plants and soil. And we never could have made it through the day if it wasn't for our DJs, Bennett Schimd, Sara T. from Indie 103, and Nicole Cifani. And finally, a huge thanks to L.A. Conservation Corps, Tracy Bartley, Teresa Dahl, Astrid Diehl from Mia Lehrer + Associates, and Mud Baron, who helped make this workday, and this garden, a reality. Remote touch sounds impossible, but we can, in fact, sense objects without physical contact

A 2025 study explored humans' abilities to sense objects in sand. Participants were asked to detect hidden cubes by sifting their hands through sand without touching them. Former monk explains how to transform your debilitating anxiety into a performance enhancer

Anxiety plagues the mind with stress, fear, and overthinking for many people. Many well-meaning friends could see you looking anxious and just tell you to relax and calm down. “Calm down”? Easier said than done. However, one former monk has a different piece of advice. When you feel anxious, instead of calming down, amp it up.

Mindfulness expert and ex-monk Cory Muscara recommends that people take their anxiety and reframe it into excitement. Muscara claims that a stressful or an anxiety-inducing experience creates physiological energy and bodily responses (increased heart rate, blood pressure, etc.) that is similar to excitement. By imagining the stressful situation going extremely well and creating more positive imagery, the mind could shift that anxiety feeling to one of excitement without changing much of how your body physically reacts. This could be an easier way for people to reduce their anxiety compared to trying to calm themselves down, both in mind and body. This isn’t just holistic advice as there is scientific evidence showing that mentally shifting from anxiety to excitement can benefit anxious people.

Many of us track our days and our tasks through to-do lists. While they’re helpful in trying to ensure that you don’t forget what needs to happen before certain deadlines, for many people it can just turn into this always-growing checklist. This could cause stress to try to get everything finished as more errands, appointments, chores, and tasks keep getting tacked onto it. It’s understandable if a to-do list looks like a discouraging, perpetual wall to climb. This is why many professionals, teachers, and psychologists are saying that you should be “done” with them.

Instead of to-do lists, experts are suggesting that people would be more encouraged and motivated with “done lists.” A done list is a mirror of the to-do list. A to-do list is a list of things to accomplish, so a done list is a list of items you’ve accomplished. At the end of a day, writing a done list of all of the things you did, including items from your to-do list, allows you to have a better perspective of what you’ve finished and how your time was spent.

'SNL' fans rediscover 1991 'Home Alone' parody with Macaulay Culkin and a table-smashing Chris Farley

On November 23, 1991, Macaulay Culkin was arguably at his peak of Hollywood fame: riding the wave of the blockbuster Home Alone, promoting the coming-of-age dramedy My Girl, and starring in an episode of Saturday Night Live. The latter was an incredible comedic and acting feat, given that he was only 11 years old, making him the show's second-youngest host ever. (Drew Barrymore hosted on November 20, 1982…at age 7.) It also featured a genuinely clever and underrated cold-open sketch: a Home Alone parody with SNL creator Lorne Michaels essentially subbing in as the patriarch and the cast serving as Culkin’s extended family.

The bit is nearly a mirror image of the film’s early McCallister-home pizza-dinner scene, playing on all of the classic quotes. Culkin asks a reliably hilarious Chris Farley if anyone ordered him a "plain cheese," and the comedian, channeling the character of Buzz, fires back, "Yeah, we did, but if you want any, somebody’s gonna have to barf it up because it’s all gone." The laughs are rapid-fire from there: Michaels telling David Spade to "go easy on those Pepsis," Culkin spraying soda into Farley’s face, the latter crashing into a table and destroying it.
