Good Instructions: How to Move Houses With Less Waste

Moving into a new home can put undue stress on both you and the environment, and since I'm moving this week, I've been researching ways to move with as little an environmental impact as possible.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one in six Americans moves each year, which is roughly 5.1 million people. The average eight-room house requires more than 100 boxes to move. Then you need tape, markers, labels, bubble wrap, styrofoam peanuts, paper, dollies, a truck (or several), the gas to fill them, and a bunch of manpower. This adds up financially and environmentally. So whether you are just moving a few blocks away or hauling your life across the country, here are a few easy ideas to help make your move easy, economical, and environmentally-friendly.

It’s a story of procrastination that could have been a $24 million tragedy. For an entire year, the New York Gaming Commission had been searching for the mystery winner of a $24.1 million New York Lotto jackpot, sold in May 2016. As the one-year deadline to claim the prize approached, they launched a media blitz.

"A lucky New Yorker has a $24 million Lotto payday just waiting — but the winner has to act fast as time is running out," Gweneth Dean, director of the commission's Division of the Lottery, said in a statement reported by The Washington Post. "We urge New York Lottery players: Check your pockets. Check your glove box. Look under the couch cushions. If you have this winning ticket, we look forward to meeting you."

Police pulled over an '80s pop icon for speeding and it turned into a hilarious photo shoot

Being pulled over by the police is always a nerve-racking experience, and it’s probably awkward for everyone when the driver is a pop star with multiple chart-topping singles. In July 2025, one such encounter went viral after sheriff’s deputies in Kiowa County, Kansas stopped a vehicle transporting British '80s hitmaker John Waite. But instead of leading to tension, the traffic stop resulted in a genuinely wholesome moment.

Waite and his band were en route to their concert at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City, Kansas when they were pulled over for speeding. Sergeant Justin Rugg just so happened to be a longtime fan: “I’m not even on cloud nine; I’m on like cloud 12,” he said after making the stop, according to the Kiowa County Sheriff Office's Facebook page.
